Can anyone make recommendation what material or system they used to connect the ankle eyelets on the ME G2 pants to keep the gaiters under tension.

I find the gaiters let a little bit of snow in at the heel, even for high ankle boots. I am thinking some elastic to connect the two eyelets together which then sits under the boot, but I am cautious of the terrain I will be going over and the metal work of crampons may wear away elastic pretty quickly.

I just used an old bit of bootlace. It lasted a week of alpine mountaineering both with and without crampons without showing any sign of wear. On my boots the cord sits in the instep recess, so is reasonably well protected.

If you get some 2-3mm stainless steel cable and swages you could DIY something like this: https://www.hunterselement.co.nz/products/gaiter-wires

If you want to be really savvy you could swage some shock cord to the steel wire on each end, feed the shock cord through the gaiter eyelets and tie a knot, that way you get a little bit of stretch when taking them on and off.

Edit: heres a how to https://www.alpinesavvy.com/blog/diy-replace-that-gaiter-cord-with-a-wire

Edit edit: If you cant be bothered with swaging, you could make something resembling the Klattermusen gaiter kit with some shock cord and a wire coat hanger. https://images1.sportpursuit.info/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/800x8...

My solution with the G2s was to sack the inbuilt ones off and use standard gaiters under the trousers instead. I think it works loads better - the trousers can move and stretch without restriction and the inbuilt gaiters just act as a pouch to collect snow anyway.

Agreed.

To hold gaiters underboot, would also work with in built gaiters, I use shockcord. Not single strand but tied in a loop. This way there are two strands under the boot which can move around a bit so wear is spread, lasts for ages. Also possible to pull one loop under at a time so can be tighter than a single strand if required. Single fishermans knot.

I've used Amsteel / Dyneema cord in the past. You can buy it by the metre and replace it when it starts to fray under the boot. 2 metres would give you enough to outlive the trousers! I have only felt the need to replace the cord once per winter season, but I imagine if you are climbing or walking on an abrasive rock like Skye's Gabbro, you'd need to replace it more often.

The other option I've used is technora / aramid accessory cord. More abrasion-resistant but more expensive!
