I stumbled upon another amazing historical map.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1794_Samuel_Dunn_Wall_Map_of_the_Wo...

Initial things that stand out:

  • Hardly any recognizable cities on what now is the US West coast.
  • The Sandwich Islands (Hawaii)
  • Tasmania is missing
  • Interesting to see Africa prior to the European colonisation a century later

So many details to dig into, I won't get much work done for a while.

I have an atlas from 1870.

Russian America (Alaska)

Argentina doesn't exist, though the Falkland Islands do !

Great big spaces in Africa

Numerous of todays US States are just Territories

There's an area marked "Russian Empire" !!!

America bought it in 1867.  Map maker hadn’t checked online first!

I noticed they had Principe and Fernando Po (now Bioko) the wrong way around.  Lots of islands on there with serious existence issues as well.  Interesting to see Patagonia before European colonisation as well.

The Spanish did "own" most of America!

There's probably an area marked "British Empire".

No Antarctica?

It's there - what's missing is Bass Strait. (Bass and Flinders were the first to circumnavigate Tasmania, in 1798.)

Good question that sent me down another rabbit hole. It seems like the first documented landing on mainland Antarctica wasn’t until 1851.

New South Wales to the south-west of Hudson Bay and New Wales to the north-west. Never knew that before.

Cook had gotten very far south in the 1770's, but he didn't see the Antarctic mainland. He must have been a brilliant seaman to manage the exploratory voyages he did.

Never needed to mark any area as such - just use an awful lot of pink all over the world.

I recommend Behind The Curve (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8132700/) if you missed it. It's on Prime, I think.

... and I bet it's Mercator.  Maybe that's why Greenland is so popular with a certain moron.
