Good Climbing Trousers recommendations

I use to own a pair of North Face Half Dome trousers and they were brilliant fit but most importantly they were a material that could go up against any rock and come away better off.

I've notice there is a trend to soft-shell trousers with jogging style fitting and waist fit, Im talking mostly Rab Torque.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good material, nice fitting (working jeans style or loose style) for climbing which you could also do a long walk in with?

Many thanks,
Luke

I tend to go for as many pockets as possible, as they always come in useful. Plus zips for aeration. I would never normally have gone for Hagloffs, but there were some thicker winter style trousers from them in the sale a few years ago in George Fishers in Keswick (before they were bought by that sports brand chain). They fitted like a glove and the material is understandably thick, showing little sign of waring so far. Yet these are winter trousers, and presumably you want something a little lighter.

Sadly, for lighter trousers, I think that you may have to spend the time, trawling through various shops and trying them on. I do think that this is better than buying on line, unless you are repeat buying.

I wear La Sportiva Bolt pants but I mainly climb indoors.

I purchased mine from E-bay.

If you’re interested in jeans-style trousers, Primark jeans are cheap, relatively tough, and are slight stretchy, providing surprising mobility. And if you do wreck them, it doesn’t matter because they’re only £15 or so.

I basically live in Alpkit Jeanius (not the skinny ones). Dartmoor granite, indoor bouldering, hiking, building stuff, working on cars, going to the office.. My first pair are a few years old and still going strong, but the oil and oak tannin stains have relegated them to no longer going to the office jeans..

I‘ve got the Looking for Wild FitzRoy, they‘ve been going for 3 years and seem indestructible. Really comfortable and stretchy, look good too.

I have been living and climbing in a pair of swrve jeans, but looking at some replacements as they don’t really make them any more and the fit/sizing was a bit hit and miss. I tried the BD forge denim but they didn’t really have the features I wanted. The alpkit jeans are interesting and they have a cordura blend like the swrve jeans so would be an ideal replacement.

How is the build quality on the alpkit jeans?

Try the Decathlon/Simond "Men’s Mountaineering Trousers - ALPINISM LIGHT EVO - GREY". £60ish, but very light and great freedom of movement, quickdrying, windproof but breathable. I use them all year around for trad, indoor climbing, bouldering, walking and Scottish winter (with waterproof overtrousers).

I've also used ME Ibex, but they're cut a bit long and not as comfy/free around the crotch whilst climbing as the Simond ones.

I think other brands, e.g. Montane and Rab, will all have their version. Softshell is much better than jeans or cotton IMO, because it is so breathable, light and quickdrying.

Otherwise, some acrylic/elastine tracksuit bottoms, if you just want something cheap.

Quality is good. (Sat here in my 3.5yr old slim fit pair that are my go to climbing trousers for everything other than mountain rock or if it's hot.)

Will buy again.

I have some of these and wear them for indoor and outdoor climbing plus walks, as well as general knocking about!  The brush holder has been used a couple of times and the thigh pocket is good for a key and has a clip loop.  The legs are very long (I'm 6' and have a triple turn up!)

I climb in a pair of Screwfix work trousers, £15 -20, hard wearing, plenty of pockets and more flexible than my legs (not that that is difficult).
