Samsung S22 Ultra - Notification issues

I bought a refurbished S22 Ultra the other day from Backmarket and everything seems fine, except I can't get the Edge lighting for Notifications to be activated. I've watched several YouTube videos to get the correct settings but still no dice. I've tried it also for the Flash Notification and again, no luck.

My previous mobile was an S9+ which had a blinking blue LED at the top of the screen to alert incoming Notifications, but for some reason (probably due to replacing the top screen 'band' with a notch) Samsung removed this function in more recent models. I much prefer to have a visual Notification - visible at a glance - rather than having to either have the Always On Display active and noticing the relevant icon or have a blinking light. I know there are 3rd party apps to mimic the old LED but they don't get very good reviews.

I'm about to do a Factory Reset (and if that doesn't work, I'll send it back) but thought I'd ask here first to see if anyone else had experienced the same problem or was aware of a solution.

TIA.

Update: well, I found a Reddit thread saying to update the wallpaper which I did, despite not expecting much ... and it seems to have worked!

Edit: spoke too soon! For some reason I only get the Edge light notification for Whatsapp messages, no other apps so far.

I had this going from the s9 to a more basic Samsung a couple of years ago. It really annoyed me but then after a week or 2 I forgot about it. I did miss wireless charging though.

Cheers for that.  I've just done the Factory Reset and if anything, it's made it worse! I think I'll be sending this one back,  hopefully it's just a dodgy unit rather than the model itself being at fault.

That at least shows the hardware is working (I did wonder if 'refurbishment' had left the light disconnected...).

So probably some arcane setting, which seem to proliferate with each release of Android...

In reply to captain paranoia:

Yes, that's true. The lighting effect is presumably just generated using the screen 'pixels' themselves,  it's not a different set of LEDs as it was with the S9+. And it only does the effect once when the notification comes in, rather than continuously and intermittently as it used to,  which is the sort of alert I was really looking for on the upgrade.
