I'm planning to attach a load of old climbing holds to a 3m tall by 2.5m wide section of wall in my son's room.  It's a structural stud (400mm centres on the verticals and 600mm on the horizontals) sheathed in OSB on the side facing the room.

I can't access the rear of the stud wall so T-nuts are out. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience fixing insert nuts directly into the studs? https://www.alpidex.com/en/befestigung-der-klettergriffe-holz-beton-mauerwe...

thanks in advance for any advice

You could overlay the wall area with 19mm ply, with t nuts, fixed to the studwork, it’d then be removable and only take up minimal room volume. Obviously depends on how big your son is on how many fixings required

Using screw-on holds would be an alternative.

On our homewall we ended up using mostly screw-ons even though we t-nutted the whole thing.

Just use a wood screw and some washers such as these - https://www.climbingwallservices.com/collections/climbing-wall-equipment/pr...

Obviously a small chance of them pulling out the OSB or snapping screws depending upon the screws used. If this risk is a problem for your sons room only you will be able to make a judgement on.

If the OSB will take it, just use a hefty wood screw, all the way through, in the hole intended for M10. You can buy Ringos and the like, but a washer or two will also do the job.

I've used those for making furniture. They work.

If the OSB is thick enough you can drill and countersink the holds for a couple of extra screws (plus one in a washer in the main hole) then just screw them on.

Think about what's behind the OSB.

As said a new inner wall is better, if not look at stuff like these.

You need something which will expand and pull on a greater area.

Possibe solution, Add an aditional layer of plywood to bring it up to the required thickness of the insert nuts. Fix by using screws both to the studs and the undlying OSB. Drill holes for the insets (using a suitable pattern, they used to havea template on metolius website or on the moon board site)  missing the vetical and horizontal studs (use a stud finder, beware of any water pipes / electrical wiringetc ) Use gorilla glue or a suitable alternative when inserting the inserts. Job done

If you’re going down that route you should consider bluetack or a couple of 3M Velcro stickies

hey all, thanks for the advice... the OSB is only 12mm and I want to avoid the cost of adding ply so I will be fixing to the studs only.  I hadn't considered screwing directly into the studs (and drilling extra screw holes in holds) so that's a great option if the inserts don't work out, thanks

The biggest issue with this approach is that if it isn’t even a little bit overhanging they’ll soon get bored of it and it’ll become a novely wall decoration. This happened with the vert wall i built my nephews.

my 6yo is already climbing well on our board at 15deg. I know this requires some additional carpentry but there are videos on YouTube and the only power tool you can’t do without is a jigsaw

thanks Twiggy, I can carp but my kids aren't interested in training for climbing or doing problems they just like mucking around with their friends!  we have had a vert wall before and it worked well for them
