I've come across a few DMM carabiners with captive bars - the bigger ones for rope access work. They have devices attached behind the captive bars. Is it possible/safe to remove and reinstall the captive bars? If so how do people do it?

Looks like they've been driven in with a hammer. Which doesn't bode well...

Thanks!

There are two types of bar.  Push in and screw in.

Screw in, obviously, just needs a small allen key to remove.  The push in will come out easily with a pair of pliers to wiggle them out.

The dmm product page is remarkably hard to find but shows each type and the corresponding carabiner.  I did not that they have changed over time (I have a years old dmm carabiner which has a screw thread bar but the page shows it now has a press fit)

update: found it -- https://dmmwales.com/products/connector-pin-spares-10-pack

If you haven't bought the krabs yet (and this is a purchasing decision), it might be of interest to know Petzl have a cheap plastic solution to the same problem. Clearly not as robust as DMM but easy to add/remove with a small posidrive (if I remember correctly?) screwdriver

Current DMM captive bars insert with a small flathead screwdriver.

What do you want to use them for and how critical is the captive bar for holding things in place?

Thanks for all the replies.

DMM customer service was great and confirmed you can use the carabiners with the bars removed, they have the same strength rating. They also pointed me to the replacement bars on the website, so I've bought some, and will use on case by case basis.

I had to buy a punch set from Screwfix to remove them, but worked fine. Just make sure not to scratch the carabiner with the saw like I did! Had to chuck that one.
