Hi,

Hoping for a bit of advice. I need a new stove for this summer for backpacking. I'll be out in the Highlands, so I was thinking soto windmaster. I got a fire maple pot because it has a heat sink which I like. I bought a soto wind master, but it only comes with 4flex pot stand (ie 4 arms). I can see there used to be an option to buy a tri-flex  (3 arms)which would be ideal because the pot has 3 little cut outs on the bottom for that to slot into -  but it is out of stock absolutely everywhere. Does anyone know if it is discontinued? If so, I'm thinking to maybe return the soto and get a pocket rocket deluxe which comes with 3 arms not 4. Or should I just use it with the pot sitting on top of the 4 arms and not set in? Anyone got experience with either stove that would help?

Can’t comment on the Soto, but if you’re looking at the pocket rocket and don’t mind something a bit bigger I recently bought the new MSR Switch Stove which I think is great. It has the 3 arms that support cookware which can be folded out and back in to the support ring for when the Switch pot. Essentially gives you a jet boil stove and also prongs for cookware in the one system. This might not be relevant if you’re looking for a more compact system, but I don’t find it takes up much room.

Thanks - that does look interesting, although I was looking for something less system like. I'll add it to the list of stoves to think about though

In reply to LesleyS:

I have both the MSR PRD and the Soto WM with the Triflex arms.

To be honest, there’s not much to choose between them. The PRD is perhaps slightly less fiddly, but loses points for its curved arms which don’t easily fit the slots on the Fire Maple pots.

My current stove system of choice is the PRD with the pot from a Jetboil Stash. Unbelievably fast and efficient. Boiled enough water for an Aeropress of coffee in just over a minute in a howling gale in Torridon.

The only advantage of the triflex arms on the Soto WM is that they “slot” into the gaps on the Fire Maple G3 Petrel, but this wouldn’t be a game changer for me.

In reply to LesleyS:

To clarify, the MSR WM won’t fit into the slots on a FM Petrel pot as the arms are offset.

Theres a few videos on YouTube showing DIY fixes as a workaround.

Ideally, the stove burner should be at around the same distance from the heat exchanger as in the original FM combo stove. Get out a ruler. You can always use a grinder on the FM pot's support ring to get the four arms fit the right distance. I'll try to measure it later for you if I can find my old FM stove combo.

EDIT: I see, the Petrel is sold as standalone. Well, you can go by the photos on their website and grind four slots in it yourself.

In reply to Moorland-wanderer:

Thanks you - I had assumed the PRD arms would slot I to the bikes on the pot, so really useful to know they don't. the stash pot with a windproof stove seems to be the rolls Royce way to go, but I don't really want to spend that much on a pot. I really like the fire maple one. I found a triflex on amazon.com that will send here, so I think I'm good with the pot and stove now - thanks for your help.

I just (in the last 2 weeks) bought a Soto Triflex.

However, I'm in the US, not the UK.

So, they're still making them.

And it does work very well with my Fire Maple heat exchanger pot.
