Approach shoes for wide feet

As per title, I'm after some approach shoes but I have super wide feet. Previously I've used skater style urban approach shoes due to their forgiving flex, now I need something a bit more technical for a via ferrata and scrambling holiday.

Can the hive provide some knowledge on preferred wide fit approach shoes please?

I've got wide feet, I got some Scarpa Mescalito a few months back - I have for 30+ years got Scarpas that weren't rock shoes in 42, but have been experimenting in recent years with 41.5 in other brands. Tried that with the Mescalito and found they are an excellent 'performance' fit, not too tight, but tight enough to be perfect for scrambling in. I would absolutely use them for what you are talking about. They have a nice supportive stiffness, which I know from past experience is great on via ferrata rungs. Not cheap, but at least a few months back Joe Brown had last year's colour scheme on sale for about 130 rather than 190, so luck and googling around might find a similar deal in your size.

In reply to TobyA:

On the other hand, the last time I tried some Scarpa boots, I found them rather narrow. Maybe their approach shoes are wider.

La Sportiva TX4 seem to fit me well; I think the first time I bought them, I commented 'feet shaped shoes? It's the future ..'

Been rather disappointed with the TX5, though; bought for the more aggressive sole unit, for later season use. The fit is tighter, the tongue bulkier, and the lacing system poor compared to the TX4.

I've got fairly wide feet and wear Scarpas for rock and approach. Mescalitos fit me well and as they're leather, would probably have a bit of lateral give for you. They are good shoes. Worth a look.

Re Scarpa rock shoes being narrow- it depends on the model. They have 44 different rock shoes, with some very different lasts.

I’ve got wide feet and found the TX4 comfortable. I’ve two pairs (one at my street shoe size and the othee half a size bigger) - the smaller pair climb slightly better, but i tend to wear the bigger pair more often.

I've found scarpa crux good. The sole is more of a climbing type compound than the mescalito, but they are likely built on the same last.

Appreciate all the replies.

I usually wear Scarpa climbing shoes as I find the toe box fits well. I used to wear la sportiva till they started making them half an inch narrower.

I've read a few reports on the Mescalitos, some saying good for wide, some saying too narrow. It's a bloody minefield. Guess I'll bite the bullet and order a pair.

Thanks again all.

Not technically approach shoes, but my innov8 trailfly wide are excellent. So good that I bought a few pairs as I know that by the time I trash them they won't make them anymore!

I have flipper feet and didn't really like the Mescalito - just wide enough across the metatarsals but quite a tapered toe box.

Guess we need to define 'wide' feet. For me, the width across the metatarsals is crucial. I've found some running shoes (e.g. Topo) have wide toe boxes but I find them too tight across the foot.

TX4 is a great fit and very capable but, unlike others, it seems, I wouldn't choose them for long walks with big loads. I love them, but they end up quite flat and soft.

The new Scarpa Rapid LT looks like the TX4 forefoot shape on a potentially better chassis.

I've got wide-ish feet and most la sportive shoes are too narrow. I went through a good bit of trial and error and the scarpa crux has served me well.

Various offerings from Scarpa and La Sportiva gave me corns. I changed  Keen, but their build quality and  durability is poor. I now wear Merrell. Lovely and wide, but not very reassuring for more technical stuff.

It is a shame that the big market is narrow footed continentals  😒

I have wide feet (plus high volume around the 1st MTP joint) and TX4s just don't fit. However the new TX4 Evo ST were close; I tried the TX4 GTX in the same size and it was immediately excrutiating, so it's might be worth trying the ST.

P.S. I have also tried the TX5 and TX Guide with no success.

I didn't find the toe box shape of the Scarpa Mescalito at all friendly for wide (or maybe that should be blunt?) feet. Nor does the Crux fit. Maybe I'm in the "super wide" category?

My recommendation would be Salewa's Mountain Trainer Mid. The shoe is too small, but the boots are great; I wear them for solo grade 3 scrambles and whilst it's not Vibram Megagrip, the sole is reasonable come rain or shine on all surfaces. Good heel breast for via ferrata too.

I feel like I've tried everything out there, there be no shoes for me! Best of luck.

Appreciate the replies. The search continues!

My feet are widest across the toes, having looked again at the mescalito I'm not confident they'll be wide enough and I'll end up with crushed up toes.

The crux don't look too bad in that regard.

La sportiva are right out of the running for me.

In reply to Boris's Johnson:

Try the new Salewa NXT, I've got flippers and really rate it!

Presuming you mean the Salewa Wildfire NXT, it's based on Salewa's standard last and didn't come close to fitting me; width and volume.

@Boris's Johnson, I don't know where you're based, but Rock+Run have a superb selection of shoes and boots. I came away empty handed, but it was good to have tried every single shoe that I had been considering. And confirmed that I have truly stupid feet.

In reply to tagscuderia:

Fair enough,

I find they fit well and I've got wide feet

I love my Altras,
I've got some lone peaks, escalante and some superiors.
Vivo do some very comfy shoes, thin but good.

I have some Lems primal, while mega comfy the soles feel foamy and offer limited protection, it's also the most slippery rubber known to man, the other shoes may be better

Might be worth a look at Hanwag whi do lots of different fits in their range although often only available directly from them. They do the Makra Pro in their alpine wide last:

https://www.hanwag.com/uk/en-gb/men/rock/makra-pro-low-gtx/?v=H100600::4047...

Scarpa have lots of different lasts ranging from a narrow toe box to wide ish but large volume (ie tall). The only real way is to try them on.

Sportiva is often only the narrow to average side. TX range tends to fit width D to E but less so above that.

Meindle do some but are maybe a little less technical and more aimed at the walking and travel trek market.

Merrell are for some reason known for being wide. They're pretty average in reality in terms of width and can be hit or miss in terms of quality.

Keen, yes they are a little wider but again hit or miss quality wise.

In reply to Boris's Johnson:

I have short, wide feet and have had similar difficulties over the years in finding approach shoes which fit me. I currently have two pairs which work well for me:

Boreal Bamba. Great for general wear and easy approaches, really comfy, but a bit too flexy for good performance on steep rock.

Scarpa Rapid XT GTX. Recently splashed out on these, a bit on the expensive side, but really pleased with them so far. Comfy enough for all-day use, techy enough for scrambles/easy climbs.

On a related note, my current climbing shoes are Tenaya Masai, Tenaya Ra, and Unparallel Up Rise VCS (the latter for shorter routes and cooler days).

Good luck!
