We are going on holiday to Portugal in late September and wonder if folk had any information, experience or tips about:-

Covilha and the Serra da Estrela

Ponte da Barca and the Peneda Geres area. We have the Sunflower guide to Northern Portugal.

What are the best walking maps for Portugal?

Cheers.

I can't offer any specific advice about these areas but, when we were in Portugal in April we tried heading out for a few walks but were blocked by the amount of fallen trees after the spring storms.

Obviously you'd hope that things were cleared up by now but remote areas may still be blocked.

No local knowledge I'm afraid but big fan of Komoot. Used it in Tenerife, Sardinia & basically any destination I'm unfamiliar with and it comes up with (so far!) reliable hike & bike routes. I'm even discovering loads of routes local to me I never knew existed.

Adventure Maps cover the more popular areas https://www.adventuremaps.pt/store/all

- they show official PR/GR walking routes and also indicate some of the climbing areas

Otherwise its the old military survey maps (these provide the base maps for the Adventure Maps) or those open/google/wiki map apps with which you try navigating in a complex landscape on your phone

We used komoot in Portugal last Easter and found it to be really useful. The free app worked well enough for us. Enjoy.
