Went to Harpur a couple of weeks ago and our normal parking spot at the turning circle in the industrial estate has now got barriers across where we used to park.
What is the best approach to the crag now - can you go up from the town/pub area? Harpur Hill Quarry

Not sure what the correct answer is but last time the least obtrusive place seemed to be with the long row of cars parked along the road at 53.2380,-1.9066. There was hardly anyone on the crag but loads of cars parked there, so can't see how joining them could feed any anti-climber aggro. Most of the closer spots we found in the village were in places someone could get pissed off about.

Interested to hear what the recommendation is.

Yeah, the parking spots by the HSE bus stop are no longer available. If you buy something, the very nice owner of the Ey Up Duck cafe usually is happy for you to park there (she is closed on Sundays, so probably doesn’t mind then). There is a better spot near the Dark Side, but I haven’t actually parked there yet.

>Parking and Approach

>Careful parking is essential to prevent conflict with the landowners and local residents, with currently two possible parking locations:

>IMPORTANT NOTE - As of early March 2025 the area surrounding and including the Industrial Estate off-road parking previously described is now subject to private parking enforcement. Notices have been posted around the area and are a result of occasions where inconsiderate parking of numerous vehicles along the roadside leading up to the HSE entrance have obstructed access. The notices refer to ANPR technology. This has been followed up with a request from HSE reinforcing this position and requesting the removal of reference to this parking location on the RAD:

>Pub parking: park on the road alongside the Parks Inn, walk up Fiddle Street and into the fields behind the houses. Here a footpath leads across the fields that joins the previous approach just before the banking. Alternatively you can go left to the College Buttress and Dark Side Lower.

>Hillhead Lane parking: take this small road off Burlow Road at the south end of the village. Follow it for 200m to park on the verge before the Tarmac sign. Follow the bridleway to Dark Side Lower in 15-20 minutes.

You sure that's up to date? Double yellows along a lot of that stretch and the bits that aren't would fit my definition of 'places someone could get pissed off about.'

I have parked between the pub and the end of fiddle street when it's been easy to do so, but on my last visit it was chaos around there so didn't feel smart to add another obstruction.

If you think it's not right, click 'report a page issue' in that page on RAD.
