Ok, I'm so late to this party that the vomit has almost evaporated but could some of you kind souls please direct me where to start with these jokers?

Been killing myself laughing at various odd tracks but now feel the need to get stuck into a whole album. What would you recommend for a first album? Be gentle....

I was also relatively late to discover them - I reckon CSI: Ambleside is probably the most consistently good and not too obscure in its references.

There’s a man with a mullet going mad with a mallet in millets!

Don’t think you can go too wrong with any of them.
Achtung Bono has quite a few bangers though.

One of my personal favourites. Might be the Matlock Bath reference (one of the places I’ve seen them play)

There earlier material is a bit of a time capsule. If you are in your sixties, your childhood comes alive with Back in the D.H.S.S. but like the reference in the title, the list of near forgotten celebrities etc will be lost on many now.   Utterly wonderful all the same and you could enjoy looking up Una Stubbs and David Nixon.  Caution required with non existent puppies however.

Excellent stuff, thanks al!

Looks like I'll start with Back in the DHSS, plenty to download and keep me amused on the forthcoming 20 hour ferry crossing...

I guess Bob Todd counts as an 'etc' (99% sure anyway)

No need for me to Google the lovely Una Stubbs or the magical Mr.Nixon though, it all seems like yesterday......

Achtung Bono is a great place to start. Or Trouble Over Bridgewater. Or 90 Bisodol (Crimond). Or CSI Ambleside. Or the brand new one, All Asimov and No Fresh Air. But they're all good. And go and see a gig, once you know a fair few of the songs. One of the finest budget nights of entertainment available in the 21st century.

I started on the Peel Sessions EP that I found in a skip.

Most albums have classic tracks so the suggestions above are all fab...

In reply to ripper:

I will conduct a survey and interview a carefully selected panel of gargoyles.

Back in the days of Taggart, I had an unkind earworm who would keep telling me that 99% of puffins looked like Blythe Duff.

Cammell Laird Social Club is one of my favourite albums.

It's a rare failure of Nigel Blackwell's (otherwise impeccable) observational skills that. I think less than 4% of gargoyles look like Bob Todd.
