In reply to Dildo:

Much quieter than a full trad rack.

I've even seen people use divers weight belts to simulate a full rack.

Dunno about ankle weights, as the weight distribution is unnatural for climbers, unless you're training for the Alps in big boots, but then again you'd be carrying a sack.

Eat more pies in the winter!!

Seem to remember seeing Pete Botterill of one of the others from the Carlisle team in the late 80's using it for doing circuits on the Cockermouth wall. It wasn't a full weight belt, just a belt with about 5kg of small weights.

Seem to remember he was one of the elite lads at the time, and it didn't seem to do him any harm.

Then again he was training for the hardest TRAD routes of the day and carrying a full rack of gear, as opposed to bouldering for the sake of it, or doing sport routes with nothing more than a few quickdraws.

I for one wouldn't call guys like that stupid !

Ankle weights doesn't sound a great idea for rock climbing. Most of the time the weight would go straight through your feet statically into the rock, and it would screw up your balance on the move. But they might be good to intensify training for hiking/running without knackering your knees -- much less impact on joints than training with a rucksack.

I brought some ankle weights to help get fit for scottish winter climbing. My mountaineering boots always feel really heavy on the walk-ins, so I wore ankle weights all the time at work and walking around for a few weeks before going (get much fewer questions at work than when wearing big boots!). When it came to going to scotland i felt it did make a difference on the walk-ins

I used ankle weights whilst in training, specifically for basketball and volleyball, after a short period I had a serious condition of 'shin splints' which is a compression fracture of the inside edge of the tibia.

Be careful if used during any exercise where impact is involved, i.e running and jumping!

Doesnt really apply to climbing unless your a mountain goat!

Don't know about climbing, but never wear them when running. You'll injure yourself.

it was tongue in cheek, sorry, you need to know me to understand. i've used one for ages, they are good, but you need to be very careful when using them.

In reply to Dildo: I recently bought ankle weights and a weight vest for the gym here. By far the most popular and comfortable combination seems to be the weight vest with the ankle weight threaded together around the waist to simulate the weight of gear.

In reply to Dildo: Check out mine and other replies under topic: "hit training" in tis forum, its indirectly related but does give some insight into what you could be letting yourself in for.

If youre a novice be careful ankle weights could easily cause you a groin strain etc especially during bouldering when say, youve got to quickly bring your knee up in towards your chest.

Remember in this sport there are no quick fixes, only time to improve.

In reply to Dildo: I used ankle weights for a while and not only can u use it on ur legs u can use them around ur arms to improve arm and finger strenght, like doing the easiest problem on the 45 degree wall at sunderland it makes it harder to pull up and u need to use ur feet alot more and that will improve ur footwork (also campus strength) but i would recommend using a waist belt because it helps with everything.
