In every place that I visit , the consession for being 60+ in age has always been very welcome and appreciated. These include cinemas, buses trains and most climbing walls.
But NOT AWESOME walls at Stockport. Apparently, out of line with all other concessions, you have to get to the old age pension age of 65!.
I found this anomaly very pertubing and I will in future visit Manchester climbing centre.

Their wall, their business, their choice of threshold for concessions. If the state think thats an appropriate level for retirement/concessions I don't think its unreasonable for others to do so too. Its generous of some places to offer concessions at a lower rate, but thats their choice.

As you rightly indicate you're going to vote with your feet.

Thanks for letting us know.

Oh poor you. If you are already 60+ now, then you don't have too long to wait until you are 65 and get a concession that I have to wait a quarter of a century for!

Interesting. Unless they are unemployed, 60-yr-olds often have high levels of disposable income compared to other groups. They are often near the peak of their lifetime earnings, no longer have to support kids, and they might have paid off their mortgage. Can you explain why you think a 60-yr-old should be offered a lower rate?

In reply to madmartin: Start a course at the local college. Boom, student discount.

Well said!

I often think it odd that little Joshua and Chlamydia get a lower entry price when mummy and daddy pay for them anyway.
Services folk sometimes get lower rates whilst in fairly well paid jobs with no mortgage.
And unemployed people don't get a discount on £40 quid a week.

I think most 60 year olds are significantly better off than me! But then perhaps I should work 2 jobs or go back and live with my Mum, silly me!

If I take my kid climbing, I pay full price for myself and concessionary price for my kid. Unless we're meeting up with friends then all I'm doing is belaying for the sprog on routes that already have top ropes set up and I pay full price entry for the priviledge of being belay bunny. Such is life, I can choose to go to the climbing wall or not.
A climbing wall is a business, there to make money for the owner/shareholders by providing a service that people want to use, it isn't there to dispence social justice like some pink and purple jugged plywood Robin Hood.

The wall I go to lets 'belay bunnies' in for free, which seems reasonable to me. Although if you don't pay any entry then you can't have a boulder after the kids have been worn out.

Have you asked? My mate gets in for free on such occasions at our local wall.

There should be a baby boomer surcharge on all services in my opinion.

Cheers for the heads up, wouldn't hurt to ask. Normally try to get down there when there are a few mates about anyway.

So they dont want the lunch time trade and they dont want 'old' people. It'll be the kids next as they dont buy enough cakes !

What kind of kids do you know - stopping mine buying cake is the problem!

As to paying to belay I wouldn't expect any wall to do that. Awesome at Stockport always ask if I will be climbing when I take my daughter down.

In reply to Mr Plow:

Surely the practice of encouraging parents to bring their offspring to a place of exercise is to be commended, no? Wouldn't a large proportion of parents of young children be likely to be short on money?

Do Service personal not have other costs related to their profession in the form of high vehicle insurance, long country wide journeys every weekend to get home (and the associated fuel costs) and the ever present danger of oh i don't know, being erm killed? Should we not help them out too? Just out of interest, why do you thing servicemen and women don't need a mortgage? Where do you think they live when they aren't at work?

You should try being unemployed in Preston: Free gym membership, including the awesome West View Climbing wall, so you can effectively be a professional athlete, all gratis.

In reply to metal arms: Fortunately. there is no fee for just belaying at Awesome Walls. It's free.

You're right, it doesn't hurt to ask. Some time ago I stuffed my knee and for several weeks was just a belay bunny. I was very pleased that I didn't have to pay full whack. Customer service and all that.
