Building a Home Climbing Wall Cave & Kids Playroom

So, I’ve finally started a project I’ve been thinking about for months — a climbing wall cave and kids playroom at the end of the garden. The space is unusual. It’s 5m long but only 1.5m wide — basically a corridor. I started clearing the area about 2 years ago and was going to get started earlier this year but had a major knee injury and surgery (patellar tendon rupture) so have not been climbing but figure this home wall will eventually form part of the rehab process.

Essentially this is a glorified shed but the plan is for a strong, multi-purpose weatherproof structure (<2.5m high) that the kids can climb, swing, and play in as well as using it as a home boulder training wall.

It’s DIY all the way, partly to save money, partly due to the awkward and limited dimensions, partly so I can over-engineer it for strength. The base is down already: gravel with some old blocks and pavers I salvaged and reused.

Because once it’s up I’ll barely be able to get to the sides, I’ve had to plan ahead carefully. After looking at a few different finishes, I’ve decided on shiplap cladding. It should handle the weather well and look good tucked away at the end of the garden.

I've started putting the frame together and can update on the build as it goes. I can provide a list of materials if anyone is interested.

For anyone else doing a home build, the article below and metolius guide have been useful starting points: https://www.ukclimbing.com/articles/features/build_your_own_indoor_wall-7?l...

You might want to check if the external wall you're building - if within 1m of the boundary - doesn't need to be substantially non-combustible. ie. not timber.

Building regs generally don't apply to sheds under 15 square meters. This will be within 2.5m height also.
