Warwick or . . . . erm . . . Warwick. There's also a fairly crap outdoor wall at the Ackers, some fairly hard bouldering at Aston Uni, or you can trek all the way out to Worcester, which isn't as good as Warwick but doesn't get as busy.

(Yes, you would think somewhere the size of Birmingham would have its own. But it doesn't.)
 Pete E 14 Mar 2005
In reply to Brow:

It's going to soon. Check out this link, it should tell you everything you need to know.

There used to be the Rockface but it closed a while ago now. Then again, you were saying about Birmingham having a wall, it doesn't have a major climbing community (not like Sheffield or Manchester). Please correct me if i'm wrong!!! A large percentage of the Rockface customers were begginers (Birthday Parties, etc.) or corporate events. Addmitedly it should have a wall, maybe even two, but i don't think it was the end of the world.

forgot to put the link up:

sorry dude

In reply to Pete E:
This would be why there's a fair few climbing clubs in the area, then? And why Warwick's now absolutely heaving in the evenings? :
 Pete E 14 Mar 2005
In reply to Wingnut:

Haven't live din the area for three years now, but i never thought there was a huge climbing community there. Where the hell do you guys climb?

In reply to Pete E:
Thats true bud but there was some better climbers around when i was climbing there. The rock face was the first big place that i tryed apart from there ive only climbed to the crystel in stourbridge. Its not a big one but its got some nice features and a good over hang (which i cant do yet but getting close) The good thing is that it never gets busy

nikkimountain 16 Mar 2005
In reply to Brow: there are a couple of mountaineering clubs in brum, ceunant who meet at the spotted dog, digbeth on a wednesday and the mercian who meet at the mobt dick on a thurs both at 9.30. you should come along to one and meet some other climbers. all are willing to take new people outdoors and its such good fun!
Brow 17 Mar 2005
In reply to nikkimountain:
Morning mountianbabe thanks for those details if i get chance i might come along to one of those meets the problem is im at work most days and the only time i get is between 11:30am - 3:15pm so most of the time i only get chance of an indoor session.

In reply to Brow: I guess you could use scrambling as a term of easy routes without ropes. its such good fun , especially winter as there is none af the belaying and hanging around (well less depending on how hard the scramble is.) there are some classics in north wales i have done time and time again just for the fun and to stay fit. you should try.

i recommend the scrambles in snowdonia guide book. take a look and see whats there!
nikkimountain 17 Mar 2005
In reply to Stu Tyrrell: theres also creation wall at mosely bus garage due to open mid may. its looking good ... trust me! im there quite a bit!
nikkimountain 17 Mar 2005
In reply to Brow: its pants!!! i have seen it tonight. me and another climber went to see hitch....

have to say the climbing wall was almost better than the film!

its really not worth even a visit!
Brow 18 Mar 2005
In reply to Stu Tyrrell:

mountainbabe 18 Mar 2005

So scrambing is more than walking than climbing then

I agree but it does me for an hour or so to keep myself toned and fresh
mountainbabe 18 Mar 2005
In reply to Brow: morning chick!

not really, its more climbing though easier routes without ropes unless they get difficult, and depending on how confident you are soloing. probably a tad more dangerous more than anything, but its like anything... depending on conditions etc
mountainbabe 18 Mar 2005
In reply to Brow: yeh, i suppose. i do like the idea of the wall with the slate features and holds on.. though its a killer on your fingers!
Brow 18 Mar 2005
In reply to mountainbabe:
ya it does seem to be a killer on the fingers
nikkimountain 20 Mar 2005

You can say everything but i think that Climbing outdoor is much better than indoor! It's better to go to see something different than walls arround you.Take a look at thise pictures

http://www.infohub.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=252

And look though the some travelogues.

http://www.infohub.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=251

And i think you will be agree with me!
Real rock is much better!
whispers 21 Apr 2005
In reply to Brow: heard about one being built at the custard factory in brum but can't get any information
MNjones 25 Apr 2005
In reply to Brow:

There is going to be a new wall built within the new leisure centre in shrewsbury

The plans have only just been submitted for approval but are up for viewing at the Guildhall in the town.

otherwise chester wall (as small as it is) is another one but with the demise of the rockface it leaves a big gap!

oh and while mentioning chester, word has it they are moving to a new location but i know no more on this. Anyone out there confirm or deny this???

** with the brighter days why not venture outdoors? where abouts are you based?**
simmbmmbmbm 16 May 2005

The climbing wall at THe Ackers is amazing!
 Wingnut 16 May 2005
In reply to Maciek:
Not a lot of use - there's a fair bit of underlying history with this one, Birmingham used to have a major (and financially viable) wall but no longer does, all the alternatives in the area have been mentioned further up the thread and are either crap, a right sod to get to or bonkers busy. Two new walls proposed for area but neither open yet. Yes, we do know about the various online databases and how to use to search for "major walls in West Midlands" . . . and the answer is "there isn't one".
