Heya

I am planning to build my own fingerboard and was wondering what type of wood people generally recommend.

Don't want my piece of art to break the first time I hang on it...

Also has anyone included pinches in their fingerboard? generally I can't seem to find boards that include pinches, but I'm sure there is a good reason for that. (I might just stick to wooden balls hanging on a string.

thanks a lot

If you're putting it up in your lounge, I'd go for walnut or mahogany. Otherwise spruce.

In reply to Robin Head: You need wood with a fine grain. I don't know what type of wood beastmaker uses. I think that pinches need to be included in more fingerboards. One with pinches can be seen in Paul Robinson's blog at the bottom of this page (resin).

Mines made from a scrap pice of Pine, which seems to work absolutely fine (although I didn't expect it to to the honest).

I suggest you do the same, particularly if it is your first go as at least pine is cheap if it all goes horribly wrong the first time.

In reply to Robin Head: Pine is fine. It's also easier to work on with chisels etc than hard woods.

Then pine it is I guess.

I fortunately have a proper mechanical workshop in my physics department that I use all the time to build other stuff, can't wait to get going!

where do you usually get blocks of wood from? I tried wickes/B&Q and the only big enough piece of wood I could find were fenceposts...
In reply to Robin Head:
We use Amercian Whitewood for our Mini-Hercules boards, a common hardwood that is easily to find sustainably sourced.
If you are using softwood then round any edges well as you have a danger of splinteringotherwise.

In reply to Robin Head: You could laminate several planks together.

Wickes sell timber
* Timber depth: 38mm (1 1/2'')
* Timber Width: 144mm
* Timber Length: 2.4m

but any decent timber yard would have what you want.

In reply to Robin Head: Go to your local timber merchants and you will be able to pick up a piece of cut-off for next to nothing!

I used Sapele for mine and it seems fine. I've also heard that Poplar is commonly used.

Go to any building site and ask them if they have any joist ends, they can be 9x2's or 8x3's and plenty long enough for a fingerboard.
