Do the BBC weather people know something everyone else doesn't? Why are they predicting -10 for aviemore when everyone else is suggesting around 0 for saturday. Has anyone seen a reliable weather forecast.

In reply to Liam M:
If you mean the BBC website, then their forecast is a waste of space at the moment, they can't even get the current conditions correct (supposed to be glorious sunshine in York at the moment, it's currently pissing down).

For Aviemore, most reliable are http://www.mwis.org.uk and http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=17151

In reply to Liam M: Don't know who your others are suggesting 0. Metcheck.com as it at-11 and the met office-10. Look at the pressure sequence from the BBC and follow back track the cold front that will pass over sat pm. I would be cold if I came from there.

In reply to Willber: Also don't be suprised if it is slightly warmer up in the hills saturday night, as there may be a very strong temperature inversion.

In reply to Willber:
Metcheck says -1 not -11. Geoff Monk has -4 at 900m.

In reply to Simon Caldwell: The OP was for sat night. Look at the 6 am and 9 am temps on this: My link says -11 think you must of misread it.
http://www.metcheck.com/48hrforecast.asp?lat=57&lon=-3&locationID=5...

Also Geoff Monk is based on a midday predicted temp. So will be warmer than the night time temps the op mentioned.

In reply to Simon Caldwell: Sorry that should read 3 am and 6 am sunday.
 Willber 16 Dec 2004
In reply to Simon Caldwell: Also set myself up for a fall as I was refering to the windchill factor not the ambient temp, in which case your -1 would be closer the mark.
In reply to Willber:
Aren't temperature inversions usually associated with high pressure systems? The forecast for sat is 1000 mb, not really high pressure in my book.
If Geoff Monk is right there'll be lots of people out walking on Kinder on sunday!!!

In reply to AndyK: Don't think the BBC is wrong as such, really hard to describe the whole days weather with one symbol. They have over simplified weather because they believe that most don't understand it. As for temps, there much easier to predict as there are far less vairiables sassociated with them.

In reply to Northern Mountain Monkey: You can also get strong temperature inversions with occluded fronts, ie warm air trough sitting just above the lower levels of cold air. Depends on the cloud base and thus the base of the occlusion. You are right though they are normally a feature of high pressure systems.

In reply to Willber:
I was looking at http://www.metcheck.com/MountainForecast.asp?lat=57&lon=-4&Mountain... which has -3 at 900m for Saturday night.
In reply to Willber:
True, I had never considered that! (being a geography student aswell!lol)

In reply to Simon Caldwell: Like I say I was using the general forecast at 0m which factors in the windchill too.

In reply to AndyK:

Mark this page and watch the rain as it approacheds and goes past. If you look at the 12 hours past you will see the rain build up and can judge when it will pass you. Did just that this morning and put washing out to dry at 11am when the rain had passed. Got it in at four just as the next shower arrived.

too many showers to predict today in Edinburgh, they may hit you or miss you.
