I'm looking at heading out to Cogne for some ice climbing this winter. Does anyone know of any cheap places to stay (hostles, gites etc) as trying to go on a budget.

Also, has anyone got any tips on routes, where to go?

Cheers All

In reply to benhedley: Accommodation - not particulrly cheap, but very good www.hotellabarme.com - Located in Valnontey and gives nice short walk ins to this valley. Short drive to Cogne.

Routes - See Cascades autour du Mont Blanc Vol 2 (1998) by Daminlano and Perroux. Contains all the classics and gives routes a quality rating.

Try the heated toilet block in the lillaz campsite. generally empty and free in winter.

In reply to shadowdemon: ooh where's that then - dont remember seeing a campsite there last winter but we had rented an apartment between a load of us so weren't really looking I guess. To the OP - incidently that is a pretty cheap deal if you can get 4 or more of you to fill a decent sized room. Think it weas called Les Nigretelles or similar - they had an ad on here so search the premier posts - was v nice, was ensuite with a small kitchen, located in Lilaz so close to Valleille where theres plenty of routes to be had and had brekkie included - the owners were absolute legends too. Also stayed in hotel La Balme when mates with a car left which was awesome, had dinner included and a sociable bar etc but was quite a bit more expensive.

In reply to Rob Dyer: les nigritelles is good and not too expensive . like valnontey you can walk to more climbs than you could do. carlos and elisa are also very freindly/helpful into the bargain

RE: Hotel La Barme

There was a massive contagious illness problem there when I stayed in winter 2005. It had been on going for a while but they continued to take bookings and never warned their guests. About 80-90% of all the guests who stayed there over the course of a couple of weeks fell ill. If it had been the UK they would have been shut down. The food is rubbish but its cheap. I don't recommend them. Better to rent an apartment and self cater.

When I stayed there I thought the food was great but expensive!

For me, another vote for Les Nigritelles.

In reply to RocknRoll: I stayed there for a few days this summer, the food was very good & if I was in the area would gladly stay there again
