I am looking to do some wild camping over the winter in Snowdonia and wondered if anybody had some recommendations?

Go high and off the beaten track. Best if your tent is not visible from any roads. If you are staying in one spot for just one night at a time you shouldn't have any trouble. If you want to install yourself somewhere for like a week then go find a campsite.

Used to camp behind the boulders a while back - the grumpy bloke who comes round claiming to be the owner and demanding money only ever turned up at weekends in the summer though.

Probably more scope in the Carnedds than anywhere else. Make sure it stays that way by leaving no permanent trace please.

Don't forget the hot water bottle!

In reply to troll: Yep, have been wild camping before and have done my Summer ML training so understand the need to look after the environment etc. I was looking at the possibility of some places in the Carneddau when I was walking there over the weekend. But was just wondering if there was anywhere that somebody could recommend as being really good for sunrises, remoteness etc?

In reply to Ian Archer: MMMMMM Goats cheese pizza!!! Best pizza in the world, probably thats why its a good idea for me to go wild camping so I can't get near to it! Have suggested the idea to a couple of others who seem up for it over the winter when our meets peeter out a bit. Quite fancy the Rhinogs aswell if you and Jo are up for it?

I used to frequent the old mine buildings on the Watkin Path. Lovely. Or up the ridge (to Y Aran) to the left of the Watkin path if you're looking for good views (though it's always rained whilst I've been up there).

Bivying on the north side of the summit's always good for a giggle though, just stay out of sight of the top station!

In reply to MountainGal: I always wanted to camp up near the wee lake under Yr Elen in the Carneddau. It's quite an impressive spot with some jagged crags above to the linking ridge with Carnedd Lllewelyn, and the NE Ridge of Yr Elen as a fun Winter scramble. Doesn't get any sun though. Walk in from Bethesda.

In reply to MountainGal: Moelwyns an easy option, carneddau - loads of places, my fave is cwm cneifion (sp?)

Myself and a friend have been trying to spend a long weekend camping under Cloggy, climbing on said crag, for about two years, but the weather's always caught us out. Looks like a lovely place to spend a few days.

Part of your issue will be water supply (what am I saying - in Wales!!), so a high cwm with a stream is nice _ as others say, carneddau is good - easy one is half way up Pen yr Ole Wen near the lake (Ffynnon LLoer!) - bit boggy though, unless you are careful. Alternatively, there's the long walks up from Bethesda so you are under C LLewellyn - you don't get many people up these - and you can look @ Black Ladders and suss it for ice climbing!

Cwm Glas on the north side of Crib Y Dysgyl is very nice and quite impressive in full winter nick.

Wild camping is pretty good in the corries above Cwm Idwal, either in Cwn Cneifon (the nameless cwm) or in Cwm Bochclywd (Australia Lake). You can even camp in the cwm on Y Garn. There is a lake or stream in all the places, so water supply is easy. Depending on what you are doing, there are some lovely spots in the Rhinogs or the Moelwyns. The area around Cnicht is pretty nice.

Have fun!
