1. Weekend Intro to Winter Mountaineering (6/7th February 2010) Plus Marmot Gear

Comp Square Win a place on a weekend course, an Intro to Winter Mountaineering at Glenmore Lodge. This short course will introduce participants to the technical skills to tackle winter scrambling type terrain, up to grade I on Britain's mountains. We will introduce you to basic winter climbing and belaying skills however the course should not be seen as a winter climbing course.

2. Weekend Winter Skills (6/7th February 2010) Plus Marmot Gear

Perfect for those of you that are happy roaming the hills in summer but need to learn the basic skills to be safe in winter. You could be a great summer climber and want to move to winter climbing but getting to the climbs is as important as the climbing itself. Weekend Intro to Winter Mountaineering

Two Days at £270.00

This short course will introduce you to the technical skills to tackle winter 'scrambling' terrain, up to grade 1 on Britain's mountains.

We will introduce you to basic winter climbing and belaying skills however the course should not be seen as a winter climbing course.

This short course will introduce participants to the technical skills to tackle winter scrambling type terrain, up to grade I on Britain's mountains. We will introduce you to basic winter climbing and belaying skills however the course should not be seen as a winter climbing course.

The actual programme is fairly flexible, with your instructor basing the two days around the topics below, taking into account individual needs and aims, weather, snow conditions etc.

  • The course will concentrate on safe and confident movement over grade I winter terrain (50 degrees or so and usually exposed!). It will begin with a revision of basic winter skills, ice axe arrest and cramponing.
  • Technical sessions will include basic ropework and belaying, including anchor selection and construction.
  • The equally important skills of route choice, route finding, map and compass work and avalanche awareness will also be covered.
  • Evening sessions will include an avalanche awareness talk.

Weekend Winter Skills

2 Days at £230.00

Navigation & route choice; ice axe & crampon use; emergency procedures; basic avalanche and weather awareness; equipment advice.

This is a 2 day condensed version of the Intro to Winter Skills course. The course will cover the basic skills required for hillwalking in the UK mountains under winter conditions.

The actual programme is fairly flexible with your instructor basing the two days around the topics below, taking into account individual needs and aims, weather etc.

Technical sessions will include the use of an ice axe for walking, cutting steps, and self arrest; use of crampons in ascent/descent; digging and use of emergency shelters.

The equally important skills of avalanche awareness, route choice and winter navigation may also be covered.

Evening sessions may include an avalanche awareness talk.

There is no overnight snowholing expedition.
