Edelrid Competition

EDELRID are offering you the chance to win everything you need for your winter sport climbing trip, but this is no ordinary climbing gear. Each item on offer has been developed with ‘added safety value’ in mind. In practice this means that every item up for grabs has been designed with clever, additional features that offer practical safety improvements without compromising function or ease of use.

First up is the Boa 60m DuoTec rope – a robust single rope, with a 9.8mm diameter. You can expect awesome handling thanks to the Thermo Shield treatment that’s been applied – this is a heat treatment to stabilize and harmonise the individual yarns. It gives EDELRID ropes their quintessential feel and cannot be washed out, keeping the Boa supple throughout its working life. The added safety value comes care of the DuoTec construction, wherein the sheath pattern changes at the halfway point. This gives the belayer instant visual and haptic feedback once they’ve paid out half of the rope, reducing the risk of running short, and the myriad accidents that can occur as a result.

Then we have the Mega Jul – a dynamic belay device, with an assisted braking function for added safety. In the event of a fall the device locks, allowing the belayer to lower the climber off gradually, by releasing the rope a little bit at a time by applying pressure to the lever using their thumb. The Mega Jul is compatible with ropes between 7.8 and 10.5mm.

Next there’s the Atmosphere harness, which uses EDELRID’s 3D-Vent construction. Weight is evenly and comfortable distributed thanks to the webbing that runs across the surface of the harness, pre-formed anatomic leg loops give it an ergonomic fit that is secure, without cutting in, and a series of ventilating holes help to keep things breathable. The added safety value comes in the form of Hytrel, a highly abrasion-resistant polymer construction that is applied to the tie-in loop. This is area of the harness is often subject to the greatest abrasion and can wear away, leading to safety concerns. The use of Hytrel prevents this occurring, improving safety significantly.

Lastly there’s the HMS Strike Slider FG karabiner, quite possibly the safest karabiner that EDELRID make. The sliding mechanism is easy to use and is designed for fuss-free single-handed opening, despite this it is nearly impossible to open accidentally and provides a safe, simple solution to the risk of accidental unclipping that is prevalent in more traditional karabiner designs. In addition there is also a spring bar that prevents the karabiner from rotating, negating the risk of cross loading.
