Head Route Setter: Big Rock, Milton Keynes Jobs

Big Rock is looking for a head route setter to oversee all aspects of setting across both of our climbing centres in Milton Keynes. With over 350 routes and boulder problems spread between our 2 sites, we are in need of someone who is passionate about setting interesting and enticing climbs for all climbers and abilities on a regular basis. This position forms a major part of our team and has a huge influence on the centre so we want to make sure we get the right person!

Your role will include:

  • Working with centre managers to develop and maintain a route setting programme and ethos;
  • Implementing the annual route setting calendar, including scheduling of in-house competitions, and booking external route setters;
  • Overseeing our in-house setters, including training and mentoring;
  • Effective budget control with regard to use of in-house and external setters;
  • Liaising with Centre Managers regarding the budget for the purchase of new holds and all other relevant materials;
  • Supervision of all route setting including all aspects of safety and working at heights;
  • Co-ordinating additional route setting related duties, and ensuring holds and all route setting equipment are well maintained and stored safely and effectively;
  • Liaising with the Centre Manager and all other Duty Managers to ensure close co-ordination of route setting with other aspects of operating the climbing walls;
  • Actively marketing of the route setting activities through social media;
  • Setting and checking of routes yourself, ensuring all setting meets quality standards;
  • Maintenance of all walls and wall infrastructure, including minor repairs as needed.

This position could be full time or part time. The full time position would be 40 hours per week undertaking additional counter/reception/instructing work. Part time would be 16-20 hours. The expected salary for a full time role is in the range of £18,000 – £19,500 depending on prior experience, and pro rata for the part time position.

Essential Skills:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the commercial requirements for climbing centre route setting;
  • Have excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise and manage the setting at two sites;
  • Outgoing, enthusiastic, and open minded with a genuine enthusiasm for working with people;
  • Excellent communication with a high level of interpersonal skills;
  • Good attention to detail with the ability to also see the big picture;
  • Self-motivated with the ability to use own initiative and strong problem-solving skills;
  • Be a calm, patient and approachable person, with a desire to learn and grow;
  • Actively seek constructive feedback from fellow setters and customers and continually seek to understand the needs of the climbing community;
  • Be an excellent team player and lead by example, capable of maintaining a tidy workspace with a focus on safety;
  • Be a passionate climber, including lead climbing and bouldering, with experience of both indoor and outdoor climbing;
  • Be an experienced route setter;
  • Have computer skills and social media experience;
  • Be flexible regarding working hours and holidays to reflect the needs of the business.
