The Westway is looking for a talented individual to join us it lead our Coaching team. The position is central to the running of one of the UKs most influential Climbing centres and not only are you joining the Westway team but you will also be working with one of the UKs largest employer of climbing professionals (Everyone Active) and all the advancement opportunities that go with it.

Job purpose

The Head Climbing Coach / Climbing Coach Manager is responsible for all aspects of the quality of the delivery provided to our customers by the coaching team.  You will ensure that Westway Climbing is providing industry-leading coaching both in its quality and its safety practices.  You will be responsible for identifying the training needs of our team to ensure its industry leading standards.

You will work closely with the Head of Climbing to ensure that the coaching quality is of the highest standard, the commerciality of the centre is second to none and the Westway pushes the industry standard towards excellence.

We are advertising this dual position (Head Climbing Coach or Climbing Coach Manager) at this time as we are keen to explore a breadth of possible candidates that might apply. Principal accountabilities

The ideal candidate will be accountable, and leading, on the following:

  • a continuous process of monitoring and review ensure the coaches work to a high standard of quality.
  • Ensuring the centre's reputation as a centre of excellence is for coaching is maintained and enhanced.
  • Providing line management to the climbing coaching team and the Climbing Activity Coordinators.
  • Monitoring, and an up to date industry knowledge, to identify training needs of the coaching team.
  • Managing and identifying required training for coaches and to facilitate or arrange for external training when required.
  • Working with the Head of Climbing to recruit new coaches.
  • Facilitate the induction and training of new coaches in line with the high standards of the Westway Climbing Centre
  • Ensuring the Westway Climbing Squad is run efficiently and to high standard through effective management.  Ensure the participants are taking part in the competitions and representing Westway in a positive manner.
  • To ensure the program is scheduled correctly and efficiently. 
  • Working closely with the Head of Climbing to develop coaching syllabuses for new program products.
  • Control climbing program expenditure.  Work with the Head of Climbing to ensure the climbing program is delivered within budget.
  • Working positively in accordance with the organisations Equal Opportunities Policy.
  • Working positively within the organisations safeguarding and data protection policy
  • Achieving and maintain Quest accreditation.
  • Carrying out any other duties as may be reasonably required

Person specification

  • You will need to have the right blend and balance of commercial awareness, people management and business strategy, as well as
  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Knowledge of the health and safety considerations of a large commercial sports centre.
  • Relevant coaching experience in a large commercial sports business.
  • Experience of managing budgets.
  • Knowledge of promoting sports activities.
  • Ability to manage team and facilitate training.
  • Managerial and social courage to effectively run a dynamic and diverse team.
  • Responsible, punctual and able to manage own time effectively. Flexible working possible.
  • SPA/RCI or CWA/CWI holder desirable.

Principle location Westway Sports Centre

Hours 40 hours per week

Working hours Flexible depending on demands of programme

Remuneration £28 – 35k depending on experience. PRP possible.
