Putting Huddersfield Back on the Climbing Map
‘New wall in Livesey’s home town’ was the February 1992 headline in On The Edge climbing magazine (issue 28). Now, in 2015, we can bring you the news that once again Huddersfield has a NEW climbing wall. The Climbing Centre Group, who operate climbing walls in Manchester, Harrogate and Reading, are opening a brand new climbing facility in Huddersfield’s new state of the art leisure centre operated by Kirklees Active Leisure.
The wall, standing at 12.5 meters, has been specially built for climbers. It boasts a wide variety of angles from steep walls to easy corners, spread over 27 lines with plenty of both lead climbing and top rope climbing on grades from 3 to 8a. There is also a bouldering section, which has great climbing set from VB to V8+, accross a host of great angles. Finally the climbing wall offers a dedicated training area, which includes a campus board and finger boards.
“This facility replaces the legendary 1992 wall that was hidden in the depths of the old Huddersfield Sport Centre. This new wall is modern, stylish and managed by climbers, but has the added benefit of being housed in an amazing 21st century leisure centre. Back in ‘92 the old wall placed Huddersfield on the indoor climbing map and with this wall we are hoping to repeat the same feat”
Rik Battye, Centre Coordinator
