Premier Post: Head of Climbing Reports to: Head of Operations

Location: Westway Sports Centre

Hours: 40 hours per week

Salary: £31,388 per annum

Job Purpose

As Head of Climbing, you will be responsible for managing the Climbing centre. This includes responsibility for the commercial success of the centre, the management of the climbing operations and coaching teams, the sports development programme, the route setting programme, all aspects of health & safety, maintenance and external contractors.

Principal Accountabilities

The Head of Climbing will be expected to take ownership of the areas of accountability below and develop them in line with the needs of Westway Trust.

Responsible for the review, development and delivery of the business strategy and objectives in climbing and effective stakeholder management.

Responsible for setting and achieving the climbing centre budgets to deliver value for money and maximise income including development of new products and market launch; securing external investment opportunities and supporting Finance team to manage customer debts.

Responsible for developing the sales ethos amongst the climbing team, ensuring that the team have the full product knowledge, sales skills, sales systems and up selling ability, to maximise sales opportunities and achieve sales/income targets.

Understand industry trends and analyse data to identify opportunities for business growth; identify trends and gaps in the climbing centre usage and implement action; provide management information about climbing activities in the centre.

Line management of operations and coaching teams to develop a high performance multi- functional team where all team members are trained to the appropriate standards.

Ensure the route setting programme is a leading edge standard, delivered by the climbing operations team.

Work closely with Management on all facility developments and refurbishments ensuring the climbing centre operates within the Trust’s environmental policies.
Oversee the effective delivery of the coaching programme, casual climbing, corporate events, and holiday programmes; provide coaching to customers as appropriate.

Responsible for all aspects of health and safety including maintenance and fault reporting, data protection, safeguarding, security and effective delivery of operational programming within the climbing department.

Ensure that a high standard of customer service is delivered in the climbing department including obtaining feedback from customers.

Work with other departments to improve outreach through marketing and development activities.

Work positively in accordance with the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy.

Achieve and maintain Quest accreditation and maintain Investors in People (IiP) accreditation.

Carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required

Person Specification

You will need to have the right blend and balance of commercial awareness, people management and business strategy, working for a charity supporting and enhancing the lives of people in the local community.

Previous experience of effectively coaching and managing operational teams and experience of effective contract management.

Experience of junior and adult climbing coaching with large groups and individuals and ability to identify and develop junior talent and climbing development.

Experience of developing a climbing pathway. Organising events for the public and ability to effectively manage and deliver projects on time and within budget.

Ability to work as part of a team, and using own initiative to deliver solution focused outcomes to improve customer experience. Ability to multi task with conflicting priorities whilst delivering business objectives.

Communicate effectively at all levels within the working environment e.g. face to face, online, written and over the phone. Demonstrate a readiness to make decisions and make systematic and rational judgements based on relevant information.

Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field and relevant health & safety qualifications
