Crux is a small British based company dedicated to producing the finest mountaineering equipment. Although best known for its range of bombproof climbing rucksacks, crux makes a variety of high quality and functional equipment, from tents through to sleeping bags.

New Zealander Carol McDermott founded crux in 2002 after working as a product manager for a number of well-known outdoor brands. His vision was to create a range of equipment devoid of superfluous features and designed purely for climbers the antidote to the watered-down, over-featured products with which the market was awash. McDermott is himself an accomplished alpinist with ascents of Bhagirathi III, Shivling, Gasherbrum 2 and Ama Dablam (this last solo), along with notable failures on Latok and Fitzroy. While crux continues to refine its product, its original strap line remains unchanged: uncompromising products for climbing and alpinism.

Cruxs best -known product is the ubiquitous AK47 rucksack. Launched back in 2002, it was perceived by the market as revolutionary. In fact there was nothing new about the design: inspired by his first climbing sac (a Macpac Torre from 1983), McDermott simply wanted to create a streamlined, single-compartment rucksack that was both light and tough.

Alpine Rucksacks Crux produces a range of sacks, varying from 30 litres through to 70 litres. Our RK and AK ranges are made from a Kevlar material. The seams are welded, making the bags fully waterproof. The newly released AX range is made from an exceptionally tough Dyneema rip-stop fabric.

Sleeping Bags

Crux believes there is only one kind of sleeping bag that is ideal for alpinism: a down-filled bag incomparable for warmth and lightness with a completely waterproof shell to protect it. cruxs Torpedo sleeping bags combine a highly breathable, waterproof and air-permeable eVent shell with 850 fill power (EU) Polish goose down.
