The climbing area covered in this guide is located in the southern part of the province of Teruel, specifically in the Alto Mijares region. This area boasts breathtaking landscapes, where lush vegetation surrounds both banks of the Mijares River and its tributary, the Palomarejas.

Just a few meters from their confluence, the river has carved out a significant depression, exposing impressive limestone walls ranging from 20 to 50 meters in height along the banks of both rivers. These walls did not go unnoticed by climbers, and in the mid-1990s, a few pioneers recognized their potential for climbing. This led to the first routes being bolted in what are now known as the Obras Maestras and Central Park sectors.

In 2012, the area saw a new surge of development as local climbers from nearby towns became increasingly drawn to its potential. Inspired by the high-quality rock and stunning surroundings, they continued equipping new routes, discovering fresh challenges with each ascent. As the number of sectors grew, so did the community of route developers, who, with dedication and without financial gain, contributed to the more than 500 routes that exist today. Their efforts also included creating trails through previously inaccessible terrain, leveling out the base of climbing sectors, and installing signage to guide climbers to different areas. Thanks to their work, Alto Mijares now offers a diverse range of routes suited to all tastes and skill levels.
