20m, 2 pitches.

Rockfax Description
A fine historic HVS which features two contrasting pitches, a mid-height stance and a belay on a proper summit.
1) 5a, 10m. The tricky, slanting, jamming crack, and a short traverse, lead to a small stance on the arete (awkward belays).
2) 5a, 10m. Step right, climb the wall (gear in the vertical crack) then move left (there is bizarre no-hands rest here) then mantelshelf to the easy upper slab. Enjoy the summit experience then abseil from the ring-bolt. © Rockfax

βeta: Hungover, run down, a bit ill. Damp, slimy hand jamming. Can you jam? No. Okay let's make it harder. The perfect combination for a great time. Nails first pitch for me, one to come back to with more experience and in the dry but managed to get up just about. Amazing second pitch but wish I could have felt my fingers. Classic route. A must do.

βeta: Ended up leading both pitches, the first pitch isn't technically difficult, but stopping to put gear in is a nightmare. Went left after the first pitch which was a mistake, then found the traverse desperate, top pitch is amazing you have really got to enjoy it. the top pitch is my style of climbing but the bottom pitch isn't anyones style of climbing except joe brown's.

βeta: What a fantastic route. As mentioned, don't miss out on the knee-bar (both knees!) hands-off rest just below the final mantle on the second pitch. You can pause there and enjoy the great position. Great North Road *was* my favourite grit HVS, but now I'm not so sure. Magic!

βeta: First pitch was very good but very sustained. Unfortunately the worst section of the crack wit hthe thin jams was laos wte, making it especailly difficult, I had to semi-layback part of it. Top pitch would be softish HVS 5a if it wasn't for just having done the bottom one. Awesome route.

βeta: Did this yesterday on one of the hottest days of the year so far, i thought the crux was tryin to get the bomber nut in on the second pitch as trying to hold onto a frictionless ledge with one hand in the boiling heat with sweat pouring out of everywhere is extremely difficult. Suffice to say i dint flash it, ah well first Hard Rock route though Yipee!

βeta: I agree with the first pitch synopsis; very pumpy!! My partner made a awkward looking head jam to matleshelf into to belay position (sacrificnig his helmet in the depths of the break!!) As, for the 'bomber rock 9', i had one ready on a quick draw but 2 to my dismay, it didnt fit. then got very tired whilst placing a solid wallnut 5 and was knackered for the crux. All in all, an awsome route, an only my second HVS. If you can battle through the first pitch... u'l be happy u did!!

βeta: I found the first pitch hideous! Starting was awkward but eventually managed it by basically throwing myself at it (didn't use boulder), placing gear was strenuous and I found the gear then got in the way of the jams. I then sat on ledge on left for a rest which was probably a mistake since it's pretty awkward to get back down to top of crack in order to do the hand traverse. Once I got onto the traverse however I found it easy (only a couple of moves and more to stand on that it first seems). Once at the belay we were subjected to rain, hail and gales and were seriously considering abbing off. We decided it would be just as quick to climb up as go down and partner did splendidly on top pitch in the rain. As we squelched off to Grindleford cafe for celebratory tea and chip butty clouds melted away, sun came out and it was brilliant weather for rest of afternoon.

I was exhausted from camp but gave it a go and fell a bit getting the gear Chris had fallen on out but got to the ledge in the end. Pete Whittaker was there again which again was surreal but also amazing. I tried the second pitch but didn't get mega far. We abbed off Chris's anchor instead of the mallion for some reason. Then after pulling the rope through realised it was a pinnacle and we couldn't just ab off the top to get the gear so climbed what we had already done again to get the gear and then abbed off the mallion. I was so done by the end of this.

As I mantled onto the small, sopping-wet and sloping ledge, with my feet dangling, and gear feeling distant ... I really wished I was wearing more than a Santa hat and my helmet wasn’t in my bag. Scraped it by the skin of my teeth.

gav 13 Apr, 2017 Lead O/S Lead as 1 pitch, which works fine with care, although I put in so much gear on the first, I was considering splitting it just to get the pieces I needed back. Crack went pretty smoothly, though I felt as if I would barn door off it in the middle. Was feeling the fatigue through the traverse, however, and was glad to make it to the ledge. Utilised the knee bar for a rest before an awkward reorientation for the last hard move, which I couldn't protect as well as I'd have liked due to aforementioned absence of gear. Wasn't going to retreat from that high though, so just got on with it.

A very pumpy first pitch especially retrieving the gear. The real crux was swapping leads at the belay 'ledge' which involved face to face thrutching. I lead the second pitch which takes a little bit of thinking to work out but its really good once you figure out the holds are slightly eschew. Great route great to do a mini summit. Glorious sunshine great to climb with freddie again. Best route of what was mainly an amazing day despite the conditions when we arrived and Jacpbs slight mishap.

Found the crack super pumpy and had to take a rest on the ledge directly above it, when I eventually got up it heh! Found the traverse ok and had extend the gear off the belay thread as I was attempting it in one. Tried to go up too far right (wrong I now know) and didn't couldn't see anywhere to put gear. Didn't fancy that fall so crawled back to the belay point to retrieve gear and lower off. Deffo going back to get it in the bag. Good route.

jsmcfarland 4 Aug, 2015 AltLd dog terrible choice for a warm-up. I really need to stop doing this to myself! I led P1, Caelan led p2. I got to the top of the crack pitch and was too pumped to get onto the squished up rest before traversing to the belay. Hand went a bit blue from being jammed in so long which was a bit grim, then had to rest on gear. Gutted as it was a piece of cake after the rest! Belay feels really sketchy. P2 is a lot easier in my opinion, though with a somewhat bold move getting up the overlap. Fantastic climb, coming back to get P1 clean!

Rested on ledge out left before awkwardly getting back into traverse. Spent quite some time putting the anchor together but was very good. Brought Piers up to rest ledge but he couldn't commit to traverse and lowered off. Led second pitch. After faffing with a cam at the crux had to down-climb for a rest. Not sure I did crux in the best way but it worked. Once you reach the ledge to mantle onto it is straightforward. Satisfying abseil off! Excellent, especially in retrospect.

The iron mongery is closest to the top of the shortest side of the pinnacle. What a palaver, I'll just have to get on and lead it properly next time.

onlyfoddington 17 Aug, 2013 AltLd dog I lead/dogged the first pitch. I managed to get through the first half of the crack ok, then I started to place too much gear and got really pumped. I found it hard to balance and commit on the top half of the crack. I took a small fall on the beginning of the traverse when I started to get pumped and was worried I was not going to be able to finish. Took ages with the mantle on the second pitch, but found it much easier (although seconding). One to try again in the future!

Popped off when I tried to match my hands. Ended up just below the belay so climbed back to there then tried it again but went left this time and found the mantle-shelf. chrisrogers 26 Apr, 2011 2nd Coldish day, seconded the route after doing a 15 mile training fell-run, so in poor style. Jimbles led & took stance at ledge, I tied on midway on the rope & followed to stance, Juimbles led on & finished, I then tried to follow but rope drag from me to Phil meant I had to sit on the rope at one point & haul some rope up to allow me to do the moves... When it came time to bring Phil up, the drag was so bad I abseiled down to remove the 2 pieces of remaining gear & Phill then did it as one long pitch. A multi-pitch & almost multi-day epic !!

RKernan 21 Apr, 2011 Lead dnf Absolutely horrific route. Polished to high hell and barned doored all the way up the first crack. Told by previous climbers to go over the top of the boulder above the crack - didn't fancy it so backed off to the left (tricky enough to do!). Found out afterward that it was the wrong line. D'oh. The first crack was crap though anyway, so I don't know if I want to go back...

JWB 12 Apr, 2009 AltLd O/S 1st pitch is pleasant, non strenous and only felt like VS. The winter spent practising my hand jamming indoors paid off!. 2nd pitch is balancy but stunning position. One of the best climbs I have done on grit. Rob did the first pitch and I the second. Though last year I led the first pitch and had to abb off the belay when my second couldnt get up the crack!

Reaver2k 2 Mar, 2009 AltLd dog Got my ass well and truely kicked by attempting to lead the first pitch un-suprisingly. After a few attempts and failures at the initial move, I rammed my fist into a very painful hand jam and moved all the way up on this, pretty much with my fist by my foot, then a few more wobbley moves on awkward jams. Got past the sort of hole thing, pumped. Decided bugger it i'll go for it as I had good gear, moved up and started jamming along the slightly slanting bit on awkward jams. Got to a point where I needed to switch my jams, did it quickly - could see a juggy flake just above so went for it, and missed it. First fall in a while but not a particuarly spectacular one, gear at just below waist height. Shook out for a while, then had another attempt. Got to the top of the crack, and was really pumped again, had to rest, sat on gear for a little longer, went up again, decided the traverse looked hard. Went back down again, looked for the (non-existant) footholds and swung out across the traverse. A lot easier than it looks with a couple of decent jams. Crawled into the awkward hole to belay off and brought Tom up. Belayed in a very awkward position, sort of half hanging. Then followed Tom up, complete contrast, quite balancy. Had to just the crack and toe hook undeneigh the roof in order to keep in balance whilst reaching up and left. Traverse around left on sort of flat top which feels precarious, and then a high foot and over the top. Would have been very scary to lead probably better off getting my ass truely kicked by the first pitch... Great climb, not sure how many times it will take me to get that first pitch clean...
