Rockfax Description
A long mountain adventure. Never desperate, with stunning views and varied climbing. The route involves some easy scrambling in the mid-section and isn't sustained, but the short tricky sections are interesting and the entire route is over 300m in length. A huge gully drops away beneath Pinnacle Wall. Start 15m above the toe of the buttress that forms the left side of this. The route is not described in individual pitches.

1) 130m. Pleasant, pocketed slab climbing leads to a ledge at 30m. More slabs lead to a tricky groove, above which more easy slab climbing leads onto a large ledge beneath a steep wall.
2) 22m. On the right is the crux groove. A polished corner leads to a large detached block. Continue past this to gain easier ground.
3) 75m. Scramble along paths and vegetated ground to reach the crested ridge.
4) 35m. Traverse the apex of the alpine-esque ridge passing two prominent gendarmes.
5) 60m. Follow the ridge on the right to gain the summit. © Rockfax

I led first 130m as one pitch, Tom following on as the rope ran out. Tom led crux wall & then strolled along to 'the crested ridge', which he led & continued up the ridge (some moving together) until there was just a short pitch to finish (which I led)

Did this as the start to a long day out. Great weather. Interesting early slab pitches, and good crux pitch. Atmospheric pinnacles. Other than that not sure why this is such a classic. Lots of grassy ledges and easy scrambling separates polished climbing. Good views though.

Done in B3's in the rain - turned into a bit of an epic. Parked at the base of the paved track from the A5 and headed up the hill towards Carnedd Llewelyn at 09:30 with moderate rain falling. Went up and over the ridge above the lake and down the other side to the base of the route but overshot in the clouds and had to come back. Eventually started climbing at 11:30. The route was both soaking wet and very greasy. Many of the footholds on the route are quite polished making the climbing a bit desperate at times, especially where the footholds are too small for big boots! The first "pitch" in the description was climbed in 3 pitches, almost fell off the slab in the second of these pitches as it was so slippery and the holds were too small for my boots. Had to traverse left and off root to get up. That then caused problems for the third pitch, tried 3 options and ended up having to down climb from each before traversing back onto the original root and managing to make my way up. The second pitch in the description is the crux of the route (and fourth actual pitch based on how we were climbing it). It's very polished so again I went off route, instead doing an overhanging & overgrown section instead as it had better places to stick my feet on. Not sure how this pitch qualifies as VDiff even in the dry / with rock shoes but very difficult in boots & in the wet, especially due to the excessive polish. One short easy bit of climbing after this crux and then it was enjoyable scrambling all the way to the top. Overall great & atmospheric route, would love to do again in the dry (and in rock shoes) so that it's a little bit less of a desperate grind up the first half.

Well this was an adventure! 7 of us planned to start this at the end of saturday (1st of July) and Bivvy half way up the root. We get to the bottom of tryfan car park pack up and head out. (We went to the wrong approach car park) Weather was great! Sun was out not to hot and we could see the peeks and where we were heading (even if it turned out to be the long way) In classic north wales style as we peaked Carnedd Llewelyn the clouds rolled in the wind picked up and visibility dropped to 20m. We then made a complete mistake and ended up walking 20mins in the complete wrong direction then had to negotiate a scree correction and after a further 40mins where back on track as the rain started to come in ontop. By the time we got to the base of the climb it as 8:30pm we were all saturated head to toe. So we made a rough and rugged bivvy hut and attempted some sleep that night. Next day was glorious! Beautiful sun and what a root! Its easy root finding and easy climbing but the view is amazing and well worth the mare.

Dave started out, then I led two pitches of the lovely slabs, then the awkward groove, and the crux corner, as well as the *short* Alpine-esque gendarme and ridge. Great route with super varied climbing interspersed by some good vegetation. Began seconding in approach shoes and never bothered to take them off, climbing shoes had a nice outing on the harness however.

In big boots, moved together most of the way placing runners between us on a shortened single rope. Pitches 1-4 (as per North Wales Rock) were the best climbing. We pitched the crux (P5) which Jared led - not easy with the polish in big boots, and definitely not to be under-estimated. Very greasy rock in many places. Not a bad ascent time though - just over two hours bottom to top.

! hours walking down, then another deciding if and where to start. Probably skipped P1 (little and confusing info on Rockfax guide). P2- Started right of buttress, 20m high directly onto best slab pitch. wet shoes and polished holds; P3 - from ledge over 3 m rock section onto ledge then up steep wall and round the exposed corner on nice 'cut steps' on rock :) ; P4 - up the 5m wall and went to full 60m rope length scrambling afterwards; P5 - 'Moving together' and struggling with how to best manage ropes and coils (need to learn this stuff!), a bit of gear here and there, till Gendarme; P6 - (on 1 rope only) fixed belay past the exposed ridge then scrambled up to the beginning of rock section. Continued up to 2 ledge, not before tricky move up crack below overhang (no gear directly above meant the 2nd being pulled swinging out of crack !) ; P7 - Up 3m wall then onto ledge. Middle of wall to hard. Had to resign in doing crux move on left edge of wall (very very airy!) and then be presented with end of route 3m above. Overall: very hard work, not up to par on speedy route-finding/continuous movement. Though very satisfied to get to the top, hug the partner and head down for pizza's and pint.

First ever major mountainering expedition and climb with Laurence (11) and Lena (9). We left car park with Kier, Bruno & Sian at 9.30am and arrived back 12hrs later (4 hrs after the others!) Key notes: 1) long hot walk in where we cooled off by wetting our tops in the stream near the old quarry buildings. We arrived at the foot of the buttress about 30-45 mins after the others who were still waiting to set off up the Craig. 2) First pitch was rel easy and required no real protection until belay stance. 3) We caught up the group who'd set off just before Kier and Co (who were nowhere to be seen!) and in order to keep moving swiftly we followed Kier up the far left edge of the buttress onto what was as hard as if not harder than the official crux- requiring a bold move up and onto a hanging slab - L&L coped admirably with the exposure! 4) the next couple of pitches don't stand out in my mind other than moving swiftly but carefully up to and through the scrambling section. 5)We caught the same group up again at the foot of the crux pitch which was a lovely climb with some added exposure to the right but no real trouble for Lena's shorter stride and not as polished as I had feared. 6) After the crux we confronted the Gendarme and Knife Edge - the former we dispatched by traversing to the left and then laurence did a great down climb onto the edge before carrying on down still further to his left off a tricky face - this proved to be Lena's crux but after great encouragement ('you can do it!) she did do it admirably! 7) We then moved off together up to the start of the final pitch where we had to sit out a 40 min wait in the cooling afternoon breeze (pity about wetting out tops earlier in the day) due to catching uop the same group again - however 'Vlad' lent Laurence his fleece jacket and Lena had a waterproof to keep some of the cold off - lots of rubbing of limbs too! 8) When we were finally on the move again I saw we could have circumvented the group this time by moving around to the right but both L&L coped well with the direct route and we moved on up to our final belay point (30m below the summit) in order to keep as close together as possible. 9) We finally summited at around 5.30pm into the early evening sunshine and relative warmth. Packing of gear and group photos - taken by the leader of the group we had 'chased' all the way - done with, we were then off on the long descent - the first hour or so was down the steep slope of the saddle to the south west of the summit (very slippery due to vegetation and heavy eroded in places)10) and so we made the long trail back to the car park - not at all sure of what to expect on our eventual return ~ but that's another story!!

A wild day that turned out quite well. Occasional showers on the way to the crag and then a torrential downpour while we were having lunch at the bottom. Three parties ahead of us, but two of them abseiled off because of conditions. I climed in walking boots, Luke in his mountaineering boots - pretty slippery but OK. An excellent mounteering expedition. The second pitch seemed the hardest in those conditions.

Thanks to the climber that let us abb off his gear. Group in front of us also baled but much higher up. It's reconfirmed I don't like climbing in the rain. I'll be back to do this route on a dry day what we did do would be fantastic if dry.

Climbed as part of a group approach with four teams of three. Some more experienced than others. I had two under 18 Network Scouts members; we arrived after interesting walk in at 12:00 to wait for the queue. Started to climb as the third team with Sam and Shaun taking alternate belay. At the top of the second pitch, the stance was small and we waited for the second team to clear. Tracy the fourth team leader set up her belay above this. The rope management was “fun”. Once on the large ledge below the Crux wall time to grab a bite. I though the move around the corner was slightly more difficult than a “V Diff” more so for my partners. We eventually made our way above this and set a belay 15m above the top of this wall. When both of my climbers were up and safe, one of Tracy’s climbers was having a problem. I went back down to see what assistance we could give but an independent climber helped. Our climber finally made it safe to the top of the pitch and we thanked the climber for his help. He was not from this country; in spite of this, I am proud of this aspect of our sport where we help each other. I would like to say thank you to all climbers who give assistance even if it is just to say hello and improve your moral. The rest of the climb was on short rope moving together as I felt my fellow climbers were confident. The pinnacle and the final arête near the top gave some breathtaking exposure. The final pitch in near darkness had one difficult move to reach the top and the wind. Thanks go to Tracey and Dave who gave helpful commentary from the top when Sam and Shaun were unsighted which can happen a lot on this climb. Climbed with Sam Ash and Shaun

The perfect way to spend our first anniversary together. Got to the start just ahead of various other parties. Picnic half way up and topping out into the sunshine. Rach even led a couple of easy pitches. Brilliant!

This took ages. We might have started up some random choss pile rather than the actual route. Steve led what we'll call pitches one and two. I struggled up in big boots - no fun at all. At one point we got lost and decided to climb out up some slab that looked ok. It wasn't - I was pulling on the rope like a total amateur. It was at least two grades harder than anything on the actual route. Anyway, after about 3 hours we found some polish (the first time I've ever been glad to see some!) and so the route. Steve led off while I belayed and changed into climbing shoes - much much better. A helicopter disrupted us, buzzing round and waving while I tried to shout 'climb when ready' to the out of sight Steve. Very helpful. I led 'the crux', but had a rest on a bit of gear - I was knackered and the mega polish was a bit worrying. The rest of the pitch wasn't that bad though. We were thoroughly photographed by some ramblers when we were at the top of the pinnacles and so I grabbed the lead on the last pitch to get to the top first to give autographs and recieve the praise, but they'd long gone (bah!). Nice route, more scrambling than I'd expected and not much sustained climbing. Well worth doing though - a good day out (including the walk in and out).

Very memorable - deep, soft snow throughout, but not frozen enough for crampons. Took gloves off to climb each pitch, then got hot aches while belaying. Standing in sling to clear snow on final pitch seemed excusable in the circumstances.
