Lost, dark, gale - down climbed from half height after wandering all over crag looking for easy line as dark overtook me

In two pitches I led (1+2), C led (3+4). Top quality route, good job the crag was fairly quiet as I hadn't noticed that this shares some ground with A and B routes!

I led P1 and P3. Brought the wrong guidebook to the crag so did all the route-finding just using a crumpled photocopy of Steve Ashton's 100 Classic Climbs topo and no route description, which made it a bit more adventurous. Ashton shows a slightly different line to the FRCC guidebook (a bit of Crimson Pirate up a short steep wall to the left of the bottom half of 40ft Corner, for the first pitch). We decided not to continue up the arete to the left of 40ft Corner for the 2nd pitch as per Ashton's Book of Death as it looked very poorly protected (and turns out is a continuation of the 4b pitch of Crimson Pirate...), and went up the upper half of the 40ft Corner instead as per the FRCC, which still has a couple of spicy moves for a VDiff. A really enjoyable route with interesting and varied climbing on great rock and with some stunning exposed positions. Not one to do on a busy day though, as it crosses at least three other routes!

A hasty retreat from the top of second pitch* as thunder rolled in (and just at the point that I dropped my belay device and carabiner down the crag never to be seen again). *Likely that I had wandered off up D route by this point judging by post-climb study of picture in Lake District Rock. Interesting experience.

Really nice climbing that takes a pretty easy line up the crag. Good gear all the way too.

not sure I followed the route the whole way, going by a 1973 guidebook, but a great climb nonetheless

A good wet weather route, it was almost dry when we topped out so no wet weather tick!

Recall doing this a few years ago with Howard. Approached via Middlefell Buttress, then a VDiff to the right of Ash Tree Slabs. Was entertaining getting overtaken by a group of 3 en-route!
