Rockfax Description
500m, 6 - 8 hours. One of the most popular routes in the valley. The scrambling is excellent throughout and the rock quality is consistently good until the initial part of the descent, but this is low-angled and brief. Other than the pegs on the first pitch and bolts on the abseil, the route is unequipped so you'll need a rack, albeit a fairly small one.
Approach - From the top of the Index chairlift, descend towards Lac Blanc for 50m then take the jeep track on the left which takes you up towards the Grande Floria and Aiguillette de la Floria. Just after the path branches off to the Grande Floria, the jeep track crests a small col and begins to descend rightwards. When it does this, cut off left and pass under the Aiguillette de la Floria and then climb up to the top of the Floria drag lift. 20m past the drag lift take a path off left, across the scree slope and under the foot of Pointe Gaspard before climbing the gully above, on the left initially, following a grassy path. Continue up the path to the col. The final rocky step to the col is up a left-slanting crack which may feel a bit tricky if wet, so you may be glad of a rope on this section. From the col, go east over 50m of easy ground, along a vague ledge system up and rightwards, underneath the Crochues west ridge to reach the foot of the chimney which marks the start of the route - around 1 hour from the chairlift.
1) 4a. Climb the deep-cut chimney (4a, 35m) passing a couple of pegs on the way to a ledge with plenty of good spikes for belays. There are some loose rocks around the belay spikes, so be careful not to knock anything down.
2) Go up and rightwards (passing to the right of the big boulder on the skyline) and follow easy, grassy terrain to the crest of the Crochues west ridge. You should join the ridge near the bolt belay at the end of routes 2 and 3, although you can join it just about anywhere. Follow the ridge easily for 70m (you can walk below it on the left if it is busy or wet) until the ridge drops away steeply and you are faced with a short descent down to a tower.
3) 3b. Descend towards the tower on the north side of the ridge for 5m, before coming around to the south side of the tower and making an easy but exposed traverse across the south face. A 10m abseil back onto the north side allows you to pass the next, smaller tower on its north side, before climbing a short wall and slab (3b) to regain the ridge crest. The slab section can be bypassed on the south side of the ridge by following a grassy path.
4) Continue easily along the crest with interest until the summit. From the summit descend 30m back down the ascent route before turning east and following the ridge easily to the (marginally higher) north summit.
Descent - From the north summit, descend to Lac Blanc by scrambling down the Crochues North Ridge for 100m to where the ridge widens out and becomes less solid. Drop off the ridge rightwards and descend a scree/snow slope eastwards towards Lac Blanc. This slope is often snowy well into the summer season but it is the ideal angle for glissading so you can normally get away without crampons. If you leave the crampons behind and realise you need them for the descent, it is possible to carry on along the Crochues north ridge towards the Col du Dards. Shortly before reaching this the ridge drops steeply away and from here, make a 20m abseil east to reach the scree/snow slope where the angle is much lower. Continue down to Lac Blanc and either return to the Index chairlift (45 minutes from Lac Blanc) on an undulating path or descend down to the Flégère cable car (90 minutes). © Rockfax

Karlos 11 Aug Lead O/S Done as a 42nd birthday present to myself. Flagere lift out of action, so walked from Argy and took Index lift up. Longer walk in than expected, and Lucy needed cat nap before starting. Pitched P1 but hardly necessary if confident, then moved together, lots of slings for spikes. Always took the hardest line to stay right on the ridge. Only 2 hours to reach the first summit, but another 2 (including lunch and photos) to the col (think we got right one, didn't see any tat). Gully below very loose, but threatening weather (or so the pessimistic forecast said) meant I wanted us off, so abbed down. Rope got stuck so reclimbed sketchy loose rock. Descended slightly of snow slope, slipping and almost losing control. After that scare we roped up and used deconstructed walking poles to protect descending traverse on largest snow patch. Probably OTT. Once in middle with no rocks below we assumed a glissading position, and launched ourselves. Soggy snow meant low max speed! Long walk down to Lac Blanc, and even longer via Cheresye back to Argy. Left at 7am, back at road by 9pm! Flippin' knackered, so enjoyed ensuing pizza and beer. Very memorable birthday!

Wildabeast 5 Sep, 2018 - Guidebook has a strange phrase "20m past the drag lift take a path off left" - in reality if you are standing at the top of the drag lift back to Chamonix, take the obvious path off to the RIGHT and then after about 40 meters, turn left off the obvious path and join a vague track in the scree up diagonally to the right. Route is excellent, first chimney is pretty sound, felt like a diff/vdiff in B3 boots, rest it easy moving together. The second summit there was a descent path but it looked a bit chossy so we continued on the ridge for another 80 meters or so and there was a well used abseil point (loads of tat) which took you 20 meters down onto the scree above the snow patch, felt like a nicer way to finish than the guide book descent.

OG ?Aug, 2018 AltLd Really lovely route, probably equivalent a grade 3 scramble overall. Incredibly fun and scenic, a joy to be able to move near continuously on such interesting terrain. Climbed in big boots and moved together with the rope for most of it - but would have been fine without it for 95%. A French guide asked if we wanted to go in front - perhaps he was hungover or was impressed by our continental technique climbing over/under/round a very slow pair on the starting pitch - who, despite spending years setting up double ropes (!) and it being the first time the second had belayed a leader (!!), with the tuition occurring in real time as the leader set off (!!!), insisted on wanting to go first. Not sure about Rockfax timing though: we did in under 5 hrs lift to lift from top of Index, with a few generous sandwich and photo stops. Probably 1.5 hrs along the ridge itself but very worth it. A far cry from suggested 6-8 hrs for the route plus 2 hours walking in/out. A pitch of maybe Diff at the start, a mini abseil/downclimb and lots of grade 1/2 scrambling.

jameslomax 18 Jul, 2018 Solo O/S After bruising my tailbone at the les houches climbing wall I didn't feel ready to do any difficult climbing, so I went for a nice solo scramble. Started at about 8.30am, walked up from the valley (lifts are pricey), made it to the top of the index lift at 11.30, then the col at the start of the route at 12.30 -- thoroughly exhausted already. Final section of snow before the col was sketchy without crampons, ropes or an axe (would suggest one of these items). Ridge was easy enough but felt contrived since you can walk around it so easily. Summitted at 13:30. Rockfax claims north summit is higher but this is (obviously and objectively) incorrect so dont hold back with your summit selfies on the south summit. Descent via glaccier should have been easy as the snow was an ideal consistency for glissading but I kept slipping on my arse yielding great pain from the still swolen and tender area. Lac blanc is totally beautiful and I can see why tourists hike just for this; went for a quick dip but it's just as cold as it looks. Walk down seemed to take forever, not helped by the fact I took the scenic route which had a lot more uphills than I remember.

Oujmik 21 Jul, 2015 - First Alpine route! Approach was a bit of a slog as we are unfit and not used to the loose terrain. Set off after one other party up the chimney but almost immediately a huge jam formed behind us. Fortunately there was plenty of space on the ridge for everyone to find their natural place in the order. Pitched the chimney and abbed the downclimb, otherwise moving together or short pitches using spike/block belays - didn't place any gear. Very little snow left on the way down, sought some out just to justify carrying the axes.

ebunick ??, 2009 - did the crochure berrard traverse a number of times between jan and may for fitness. sometimes from brevant, once up the hard way, with the keyhole finish (quite nice actually). all together icy if you're first off the first lift, but worth it not to be stuck in traffic the whole way.
