Lead last 4c pitch, alt leads is a little generous ;-p Wild wild cliff!!!!!!!

Wicamoi 02/Jun AltLd O/S

So glorious! A day of the finest quality. Light as brittle as glass, birds wheeling and keening, a huge sea rolling endlessly along the foot of the cliff, spray soaking the bottom of the climbs. The whole team who had transferred to Mingulay was at the top of the Wall - Will, me, Andy, Lola, Adam, Clem, Nick, John, Ruth, plus the two from the Dutch/German team on Pabbay who had joined us, Caroline and Carla. The process of getting everyone down the same ab rope - with all the protectors to negotiate - took an age, and there was much time to chat and nap and absorb the unforgettable magnificence of the place. Will and I got a good soaking at the belay, and I set off in a rush without properly consulting the route description - went too far right towards the wrong 'big flake', and found myself on 5c ground with little gear, and then reversing that 5c ground (at least there wasn't much gear to remove) to join the correct route, after which everything was easy but a bit more slopey than the now familiar mega-jugs of Pabbay, and with protection a little harder won. During my leading of this pitch, Caroline and Carla had abbed down to follow us up the route, but had, horrifically, discovered that Carla had somehow managed to forget their ropes! In all respects other than this they were a cool and efficient team, and Carla quickly decided to jug up the ab rope to get their ropes, while Caroline tied in to one of my ropes and she and Will came up to the stance. It was very nice sharing the belay with Caroline while Will led the next pitch. Meanwhile Carla re-appeared with the ropes, and so I was able to leave Caroline attached to my belay as I followed Will up what must certainly be the most outrageously good E2 5b pitch in Scotland. From steep and juggy to technical and a bit bold, back to very steep and very juggy, but all of it requiring some elegance to climb rather than thuggery - and all the rock so positive and solid, and the position increasing exhilarating. Magic. Unbelievably good. An easy juggy headwall and a pull over to glory followed. Great adventure, great route, great company, great fun. Will thought E2 5b was the right grade, Clem and Nick who were on the route before us also thought softish E2, I thought maybe hardish E1 5b, and Caroline reckoned it was the easiest 5b ever, and definitely easier than the HVS 4c she'd failed to climb in the Peak District the previous week!!! But we all agreed it was the best route we'd been on in the Islands, and the best day. Down to the camping site to listen to the 30-odd seals singing on the beach - I got quite emotional thinking of them as the souls of the dead, and hearing my mother's and Karen's voices amongst them. I stood and listened for over an hour in the darkest part of the night, and fancied I could see little scintillations of light from the seals whenever their song reached a crescendo. We decided not to climb the following day, as any route would be an anti-climax after that day on Sula. Ah Mingulay.

I lead P1, 3 and Craig did P2. It started raining while abseiling in, and the rock was soaking wet by the time we started (eventually it dried out by the time Craig climbed P2, but then it started raining again by the time I started seconding P2 and for the rest). Character building!

A very wet first pitch and an extremely cold belay in the wind. Nice to get the route ticked however. Great route.

did in 2 pitches, belayed below the roof, just above the thin section -- seemed more logical this way.

Viv lead P1&3, and I, P2. What a route! Maybe the best E2 I have ever climbed. It looks as if the route was designed to be made for climbers, with fantastic incut holds after holds on this steep 100-metre wall.
