Rockfax Description
130m. A great route with plenty of exposure but not too much in the way of difficulty. There is the odd bolt and peg, but this is a trad route so take a rack. Start just to the right of a large block, 10m from the left-hand edge of the grassy ramp.
Approach - From the top of the Index chairlift, walk onto the scree slope below the Col de l'Index. Go up the scree and break out left onto the grassy ledge that splits the face. Cross the ledge on a good path to the start of the route.
1) 4c, 25m. Scramble up to the right of the block, pass behind it and climb the groove above. The crux of the whole route is midway up the groove and can be 'circumnavigated' with a pull on a handily placed peg. Belay on the ridge crest.
2) 4a, 30m. Traverse rightwards just below the ridge crest for 5m and then cross the ledge to reach twin cracks. Climb these easily to an exposed belay on the crest.
3) 3b, 25m. Follow a vague ledge system, in a spectacular position, to a block belay beneath a steep tower.
4) 4b, 15m. Climb the tower, pausing to take in the exposure, and climb over a small summit to a belay at the top of slabs on the north side of the ridge.
5) 4a, 20m. Downclimb the slabs before reclimbing up to a notch and passing back onto the south side of the ridge. Follow a ledge to a belay underneath the final summit ridge.
6) 3c, 15m. Scramble up to a notch in the ridge and then climb it directly to reach the flat summit arête. Belay halfway along this and then traverse easily across it and downclimb to the abseil point which marks the start of the descent.
Descent - Scramble down the northwest ridge for 10m to a reach several bolted belays (the peak can be very busy, hence the multiple abseil points). Either make a 30m abseil to just above the Col de l'Index and scramble down into the gully below leading directly to the Index chairlift, or make 3 x 25m abseils on bolted anchors down the northwest face in order to reach the gully further down. © Rockfax

βeta: Straightforward route finding. The crack on pitch 2 is a veritable treasure trove of swallowed gear (like a wishing well with pennies in!). Combined pitches 3 and 4. Abbed off doubled 60m rope to the left then down climbed a bit then climbed up and down to bolt for abseil down to path (didn’t descend through gully).

βeta: Felt P2 was harder than P1, certainly more sustained, probably UK Severe. One 60m rap from chains through two bolts and old loop gets you well down the Col d'Index. Rockfax description for 5th pitch not the best. Better: Step down slab onto N side and traverse to broken twin cracks on N side of the ridge, climb these careful for the loose blocks and traverse with a slight rise aiming for the bolts at the top of P6 of Brunat-Perroux.

Phil_Brock 4 Jan 2nd With Eric from Chamex. Winter ascent. Did two pitches of mixed (M4/M5) on the lower face then crossed the snowfield to the start of this route. Did the first two pitches and then abseiled off. Crux corner is interesting (M6) in crampons and with gloves on - got through with a combination of bridging, thrutching and pushing / pulling on small edges with my crampons and axes.

Wildabeast 4 Sep, 2018 - First pitch has a tricky move - felt VS 4c ish but that might have been the B3 boots. Rest is about Vdiff at the most. The descent is confusing as the guide book (the new 2018 one) is vague. After the summit, there is an easy down climb with loads of pegs as protection, you then move around to under the summit and there is two ab stations one higher and one lower. The higher abseil takes you down to a little plateaux bit which you have to scramble and re-climb onto the other side of a gulley to descend, but you need to abseil slightly off to the right (if facing the wall). The lower abseil takes you down to the three abseil points, but they are hidden and you need to be abseiling a bit left (as you look at the wall) and looking for the points, this takes you down to the gulley which you then walk off.

OG ?Aug, 2018 AltLd O/S Fantastic setting and fun easy climbing. Abseil onto the col was exactly 30 m so you need to land on it directly from the lowest anchor, but there is an intermediate one you could probably use if caught out. P1 probably Severe but quite short, rest felt like VDiff/Diff or grade 3 scrambling. Lead first pitch - trickier than expected as quite polished. Rest much more straightforward and probably couldve moved together on some parts.

Tim Bevan 31 Jul, 2018 Lead O/S Wicked day out! Slow start as the Index was broken in the morning but we made good progress until the ab at the end. Dad went first but wasn't sure which way to go. Harry did very well but it was still his first ab so was reasonably slow. By the time I got to the end of the rope it was 17:05, last lift at 17:30. Stuffed the ropes into the bags as quick as a flash and sprinted down the gully/scree/snow. Got to the Index at 17:24, joined by Dad and HArry at 17:28, on the lift at 17:29! Great route all in all.

solenostomus 15 Jun, 2016 2nd A lot more snow on the approach and the descent than back in 2009 when I did the Perroux with Shaun. Approach was a bit iffy without crampons and axe. I was just wearing approach shoes. Oops. Got lucky with the weather. Once we were on the rock section the rock was mostly dry and it was generally dry and almost sunny. Did it in 4 pitches, the middle two were the best. Awesome climbing! Great abseil in one go at the end. Very sketchy descent down the gully add I was just in approach shoes. But ask fine and a grand day out!

Dolf ?Aug, 2011 AltLd The abseil can be done in two directions: right-hand onto the breche is the one described in the guidebook. The left-hand one, which most people seem to take nowadays, needs a longer rope (50m double ropes are fine), so with our single 70m rope we had to do some low-grade downclimbing. When we were down also a couple of guys tried to abseil to the right of the right-hand abseil, into the couloir. This is more than 50m and got them almost stuck, but finally they managed some abseiling of pegs + some free solo downclimbing into the couloir.
