2899m. The main route up Mt Aka - easy in summer, and a solid Scottish I in winter. It can get extremely cold early in the year, so take care. The classic route is a 2-day trip hiking up from Minatoguchi and staying at Akadake-Kousen hut on the first night (plenty of places to practise winter mountaineering, great food and a fun ice-climbing wall make it a great place to spend the afternoon before you try for the summit), then climbing Mt Aka and returning back to Minatoguchi and your car or the bus on the second day.

From Akadake-Kousen, turn right from the front door and head up through the forest and over the start of the Nakayama ridge and back down to the Gyouja-goya hut (approx 45 minutes). Start climbing south from the Gyouja-goya hut, following a well trodden trail up onto the ridge. Cross an open and potentially avalanche-prone slope beneath the summit and turn south-east at a signpost around 2700m, back towards the summit. This path heads up, curves round to head directly east and up through several steep, rocky outcrops onto the summit (no technical climbing). Head north-east to the hut at 2889m, then north along and down the ridge with amazing views (turn around to see Mt Fuji if it's clear). Pass the Jizo hut around 700m after the summit, then head northwest after 150m metres or so down the obvious Jizo ridge. Head down the very steep slopes then through the trees and back down to the Gyouja-goya hut. Return to Minatoguchi via Akadake-Kousen or take a slight shortcut and descend via Minami-sawa.
