Can be tackled in either direction. From the Alpspitze to the Zugspitze or in reverse. The former being better.
Graded as UIAA III but also reports more like UIAA IV or UIAA V due to a rockfall.
Klettersteig, pegs and Ab posts are in selected places.

8-12 hours.

Started at Kreuzeckhaus and walked round & up to Grieskarscharte in relatively clear weather. By the time we started the ridge we were in cloud (could see 10m max the whole time) and then hail & snow. Dropped down off the ridge approximately half way to stay in Knorrhutte. Cloud again the next day, with snow on the ridge, so didn't bother completing it - maybe another time.

Took the first cable car up to Zugspitze and the last one down at Alpspitze. Long and exhausting but fantastic views!

We approached it from the Kruezeck Hut to the Alpspitze via the Alpsitze Via Ferrata route and from there across the Zugspitze. It's an excellent very sustained route. There is a reasonable amount of fixed cable on the first half and impressively much less on the second half. We had the route to ourselves and it took us 2hrs45 to the Alpsitze and 8hrs 45 from there to the Zugspitze. Almost as good as the Cuillin Ridge!

Done as a summer scramble. Started at Zugspitze, following the crest of the somewhat chossy ridge. Not technically difficult, but pretty exposed to the left, and doesn't let up for it's entire length, making it a significant undertaking. Steeper sections had cables, but would be possible without. Due to a late start of about 11am (due to transport hassles), we were only about half way by 6pm. Having missed the only escape some hours earlier, we continued to the bothy, for an unplanned overnight stop. With no food and very limited water, we enjoyed a relatively comfortable night, with a wonderful sunset and sunrise. Left the cabin at 7am, to complete the much steeper sections of the ridge. Reached the col next to Alpspitze by noon, but not down to the valley until 4pm. Wonderful ridge but don't under estimate it's length or commitment. Must be amazing in winter.
