Ticklists: The Great Mountain Crags of Scotland.

By the FWA finish. Optimal conditions with white walls and clear cracks. From the junction with Thompson's route upwards there is currently a lot of very loose rock.

Dropped an axe from the top of first pitch so the leader had to lower an axe back down each pitch for the 2nd's to use. Great day out.

Fantastic! Well rimed and snowed up, cracks generally not iced up but wintery enough to make cams pretty useless - got two decent ones in the whole route. Take lots of small to medium wires and extenders as even in pretty wintery conditions there's generally a lot of gear to be had. Led P2 and 3, as well as the easy rightwards finish.

Well that was hard. Led 1st pitch, slabby gear but ok. Followed next two. Steep short and hooky for p2. P3 in the dark in a maelstrom of spindrift. Challenging, fell off and got blown off. Awesome lead from Misha.

Chuffed:Annoyed ratio middling. Chuffed to have got on this with Andy and James and felt really solid on the 3rd pitch. Annoyed to have taken a fall when my top axe ripped taking out the bottom axe with it. Was feeling quite relaxed at the point it ripped. Dammit! Great route.

Climbed under snowy verglas conditions. No cams and hard fought protection. On reflection, the hardest of the three VIIIs we've done.

Full winter experience today - should have left the cams at home! I'd heard that the norm in winter is to split summer pitch two, taking a stance at the base of the corner. So we did. I linked the second half of summer pitch 2 and summer pitch 3, unfortunately taking 3 falls.

We wouldn't win any prizes for style but we got up it! I led the first hard pitch then Jim accidentally ignored the tat & stance and ran the next 2 together making a sustained 30m tech 8 monster! For the easy final pitch, I think I made the opposite mistake and took the groove above the obvious tat & belay when we should have been further left, but the meat of the route is past by that point. Proper winter conditions - spindrift, icy cracks in places, good coating of hoar, rime & snow. Felt like a big day!

Amazing day on the ben. Came off the second pitch and about took my belayers head head off!! Awesome climb.
