Sheltered bouldering located on a north facing slope in roughtor plantation. Significantly expanded in 2024 with scope for further development. Good for escaping biting winter winds and sweltering summer heat when moorland venues are too hot. The woods seem to protect against light rain but also mean drying is slower. Midgies can be an issue near dusk.
The jewels in the crown are the Jay-Z and Moonlight Arete boulders in the above the upper forestry track sector. The between the forestry tracks area offers varied, generally mid-grade lowball problems that can make for a nice circuit or a warmup on the way to the above forestry track sector. Beyond the upper forestry track are some scattered slabs.
A map showing accesss routes and key boulders is in the photos for Crystl Meditation. Most boulders are geotagged in the map section.
From the dam, travel around the lake clockwise (go straight on at the dam), and follow it for 1.7 miles, you will come to the small Norsworthy Bridge and its large parking area. Keep following the road, for another 0.4 miles to the 'Arboretum' car park and park on the left. Head through the gate from the car park into the Arboretum Discovery Trail.
The easiest approach is to follow the path as it trends left immediately after the gate until you reach a 'T junction' with a bridge on your left. Continues straight along 'The Boardwalk' a very obvious wooden walkway alongside the stream, where this ends continue to follow the path right and you will soon approach a double gate on your left.
Over the double gate you will find yourself on the Lower Forestry Track below the Jungle Boulder. Approximately 200m to the left along this track is the junction with the Upper Forestry Track which rises steeply up the slope. This track turns to the right and shorlty after there is a large oval slab of rock. This is the easiest place from which to access Jay-Z which is directly above, and Moonlight Arete which is across slope to the right of Jay-Z.
Unfortunately now some of the trees have been cut down its not as dry as it was. Also the moss has made a come back on the problems.

Really nice atmospheric area with a few great problems. Being a conifer plantation, it's quite a dry area and probably a reasonable bet on an iffy day. Not as dreary as most plantations either. Good find. Tom Last - 24/Mar/13 |
