The Belgians love an Illuminated crag © MattFleming

Crag features

Dave is in Belgium. A true mix of all climbing styles and grades. Brilliant for beginners, intermediates, and strong ones, with good routes from French 3 to 7c. Most routes would go with trad gear too, to extend the fun! 70m high in the middle sectors with continuous good rock, many routes offer classic single pitch cragging with multipitch extensions if desired.

Standout are the Cosmos and Central Sectors, feeling more like Spain than anything else. Some sector feel akin to Gogarth limestone, others like Lancashire lime, yet more like pockety pembroke or Costa Blanca. For routes graded French 3-4 they often feel like British VDiffs-HS, on interesting cracked slabs which would swallow many a hex.

Sectors are : Les Autrichiens face nord, Dalle des Autrichiens, Bloc du Parachute, Secteur Silex

[Pillbox]

Secteur Czardas, Dalle du Chat, Secteur Bons Enfants, Secteur Ampezzane, Secteur Fontaine-Direct, Secteur Cosmos, Secteur Central, Secteur Super Vol et Yeti, Secteur Loulou, Massif du Bivouac, Secteur Jet 27

Guidebook is "Topo de Dave" published by Vertical and can be found here : https://nkbv.nl/files/images/tochtenwiki/Topo%20Dave.pdf

Approach notes

Park on the river side of the road and cross at the zebra crossing. This is a fast road and cars don't seem obliged to stop for pedestrians in Belgium!

The information board signals the start of the crag and it continues excitingly far down parallel to the road.

The first 4 sectors are divided from the next by a WWII pillbox.

No Access Issues

As for every crag in Belgium, this is a private property and in order to legally access the place you need to be a member of a national Alpine Club (the french-speaking and dutch-speaking belgian federations and the Dutch federation jointly administer and clean the crags). The site (as most crags in Belgium) is a Natura 2000 protected area so some sectors might be forbidden at some time for bird's nesting and some (unequipped) sectors are just permanently forbidden (usually this is printed and posted on site).
