Crag features

Wallowbarrow is a quiet and beautiful crag in the Duddon valley, which faces south and catches a lot of sun, although trees provide some shelter. Most of the rock is fairly quick drying, but the low angle and vegetation mean that some seepage and dampness can persist in places. The crag is up to 60m high, with route sread over two main and a few smaller buttresses. A very good crag for those operating in the low grades, most routes are VS or below. The classics are Trinity Slabs (low VDiff), Thomas (S), Digitation (MVS) and Malediction Direct (VS). Due to its charm and modest grades, this is a popular crag, but this doesn't usually detract from the ambience.

Approach notes

Please park responsibily. It is possible to park at High Wallowbarrow Farm (donation to farmer) or in the village of Seathwaite, at the Village Hall (donation to hall). From the farm, the walk in is a 10 minute gentle uphill walk; from the village it is a pleasant 30 minute amble, though this can be more complex when the paths are flooded.

Please treat this quiet and unspoilt place with care: do not leave rubbish or human waste; do not vandalise the rock, trees or other flora. Peregrines tend to nest in Wallowbarrow Gorge (not on Wallowbarrow Crag), but if you see birds of prey take care not to disturb them. It is illegal to disturb any birds of prey, even more common birds.

Thanks and enjoy!

Seasonal Restrictions

Dates: 1 March to 30 June

Reason: Nesting Birds

Kestrels nest on the crag but no formal restriction is in place as they are not Schedule 1 (legally protected) or locally rare birds. If they are in residence on the crag, please climb past their nest site as quickly as possible taking care not to cause any damage and limit disturbance.

Lots of wet streaks even after 3 dry days. Lots of vegetated ledges tk blame I would guess.

Didn't think Nameless was that good, bloody scary lack of gear, so glad I didn't lead it, it's a one move wonder with lots of climbing on grass!
