Small cascades in Far Black Clough © mattwomersley
The Black Cloughs as a whole are at the eastern end of Longdendale. Far Black Clough is a fine little crag in a secluded setting, and very much worth a visit. Middle Black Clough contains a number of short buttresses and makes for a good day out, when combined with the other Cloughs. Near Black Clough contains nothing of interest to the climber, with the exception of the terrifying boulder problem, The Scariest.
The climbing is mainly in the VS/HVS range. All the climbs end with a search for belays, but these days, a little searching generally reveals some decent stakes.
Good topo for the Middle and Near Black Cloughs here.
Park near the entrance to Woodhead Tunnel, just off the A628. Cross the bridge, follow the track upstream, and then follow your nose up the different cloughs to the various buttresses. The crags are deceptive and hard to spot from the top.
