Crag features

The RSPB is encouraging people to swap the sofa for the great outdoors as part of a new partnership with Sport England. The joint venture offers the chance for people to discover their adventurous side by running, climbing, nature orienteering, yoga and cycling with wildlife on two RSPB nature reserves.

The nature inspired boulders vary in size with the highest point being 3m tall and they vary in complexity to suit beginners and to challenge more experienced climbers. Grades range from V0 to V5 and have been designed in a way which incorporates natural looking features and pockets without the need for bolt on holds. With safety matting already in place, you do not need specialist  equipment to take part, however feel free to bring down your shoes and mats and tackle the tufas and overhanging ‘wings’.

Approach notes

Entry to the boulders is via the RSPB Rainham Marshes visitor centre.

Prices: Entrance to the reserve is free for RSPB members and residents of Havering and Thurrock. Non members prices are: £5 adults, £3 children.

Opening times: From 1 November to 31 January, we're open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. From 1 February to 31 October, it's 9.30 am to 5 pm. We're closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
