Tryfan Bach © Mike Peacock

Crag features

Mainly easy slab routes, great beginner's area. Multi-pitch to 80 metres. (Cliff is referred to as Tryfan Bach in the CC guide, so must have changed gender!)

It is worth noting that the guidebook pitch lengths are best estimates and that if climbed in a single pitch, some routes will require a longer rope than the combined sum total of pitch lengths.

Approach notes

Cliff is situated at the base of Cwm Tryfan, only a short walk beyond Gwern y Gof Uchaf, appearing as a rock spur shooting out of the hillside.

I think it should be Tryfan Bach. That is how it is called on the 1:25000 Ordnance Survey map. I've recently started learning Welsh and understand that the beginnings of some words change depending on the last letter of the preceding word, and sometimes 'bach' becomes 'fach' as in Glyder Fach, but it shouldn't in this case I think.

Is 'Fach' a typo in the title of this page? Shouldn't it be 'Bach'?

'Little Tryfan Arete' and 'Tryfan Bach Scramble' are exactly the same route. With both routes offering variations which draw closer/onto the arête.

Agree with other comments that this is a superb place for beginners to learn on. However, its also very polished and placing good protection is difficult so I would suggest that the grading in uptodate books is about right - more VDiff/HVDiff than Mod now IMHO

I was climbing here with a group on saturday 15th October and one of my group picked up a stack of gear left behind. If it belongs to you let me know and i will try and get it back to you.

Was introduced to climbing here a few years ago. Easter 2011 saw me introducing my partner, luckylegs to climbing outdoors and me to leading and multipitching. Fantastic slab.

Lots of mod and diff cracks but there is some severe stuff between them. Also great fun to watch the instructors leading groups :)

good for beginners, but don't take the grading too seriously . most of it is mod or dif.

Fantastic crag to either cut your teeth multipitching or introducing a climbing partner to it. The rock is sound with good gear placements and an aspect that catches afternoon sun.
