Birkett climbs Lakes last great problem

Big news from the Lakes scene is that Dave Birkett has completed the obvious last great problem on the East Buttress of Scafell. 'Welcome to the cruel world' climbs the sinuous overhanging crackline to the right of Borderline. At F8b+ climbing, but with bomber gear, a UK grade of E9 7a has been suggested.

Dave commented that he had never climbed on Scafell before May day bank holiday, this year he's already been up there 4 times!

Been tried my many including Caff... I heard its very hard to place gear as taking one hand off is a luxury? Bon Effort anyway! Be up your way at May Bank holiday, are you boys around then?

At last!! Well done Dave. Didn't Chris Sowden climb it using one or two aid points in the early 1990's? Attention now shifts to the continuation groove of Borderline itself which finishes at the top of "Welcome...". Bob
