A 41-year-old British mountaineer has died after being trapped under an ice fall in the French Alps. The man, who has not been named but came from Essex, was killed on the Glacier du Bossons near the French town of Chamonix yesterday.
He died when several tonnes of ice collapsed while he was walking with two British companions near Mont Blanc. A second man is believed to have been injured in the incident. Police said the two survivors were bought from the mountain by mountain rescuers using a helicopter.
The three climbers were believed to have been negotiating a glacier at a height of around 1,700 metres when the accident happened.
The Foreign Office spokeswoman said the dead man's relatives had been told of the accident.
