18 Feared Dead in Nepal

© Gordon Stainforth, October 1999
11 sherpas and 7 French climbers on an expedition near Annapurna in Nepal are missing and feared to be dead after a storm. They were attempting to climb Kusum Kanguru (6981m - left) when they were hit by a snowstorm which seems to have triggered and avalanche. Four survivors were picked up by helicopter and it appears that these four survived because they happened to be outside the tents when the storm and subsequent avalanche hit.
