Boulderer "Lucky to be alive" After Coastal Rescue

In late February Simon Williams slipped while bouldering at the coastal venue of Angel Bay, North Wales, breaking his femur and knocking himself unconscious.

Local paper The Daily Post reports that "His leg got trapped below the tide line and rescuers who freed him said he was lucky to be alive."

The alarm was raised by a passer-by who saw him trapped in the boulders. He was rescued by the coastguard and the RAF rescue team, who winched him out by helicopter.

“We had to call the team at RAF Valley to come and help us out with the helicopter because he was stuck inside some rocks, it was difficult to get to him and the access was restricted." said a spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Simon was airlifted safely to the local hospital.

Angel Bay is a tidal bouldering venue on the Little Orme, near Llandudno, North Wales. The landings are generally made from sea washed pebbles and can change height dramatically between visits. Top outs can be slimy with seaweed and many of the problems are below the high tide line, meaning if you are trapped at the base of a boulder, the danger of drowning is very real.

Who says bouldering isn't dangerous!

Not belittling the poor man's injury, but the headline writer is inviting ridicule.

We are all lucky to be alive

Why? 'Lucky to be Alive' is in quotes. Quotes from his rescuers as taken by the Daily Post. Quotes reflect their opinion rather than fact. Anyway, if I was trapped on a beach below the tide line with a broken leg, then I'd be a bit concerned for my safety!

Ah the joys of seaside bouldering. Some of my favorite problems are in a secluded cave that floods on the tide so you have to wade out. In there alone on a dark winters night is not the time to incapacitate yourself! jk

It does make you think. I went to Angel Bay once, and got to agree that some of the top outs are a little hairy, especially Chaos Emerald Crack (though I may have been doing it wrong). Brilliant problems though!
