COMPETITION CLIMBING AND THE OLYMPICS

Next Sunday the BMC's National Council will make an announcement on whether or not the BMC will back the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) in its campaign to get competition climbing upgraded to the Olympics.

By some estimates there are over 2,000 UK climbers of all ages competing in climbing competitions and it is gaining momentum. Quite rightly, considering the participation in the UK, the British Mountaineering Council are now heavily involved in competitions (BMC Competitions pages). The BMC hosts national and international events, organises the BMC Youth Climbing Series, the BMC Leading Ladder Series, the British Bouldering Championships, British Lead Climbing Championships and has a climbing walls and competition officer, Rob Adie.

Climbers in the UK and the BMC Area Committees have been discussing whether to support competition climbing as an Olympic sport for the last few months. Next Sunday is decision day.

BMC COMPETITION NEWSLETTER

The BMC Competitions Committee have published the first Competitions Newsletter called Psyched. Its purpose is to inform BMC members what is going on in the world of competition climbing.

This is a comprehensive 23 page publication edited by Iain McKenzie, Chair of the BMC Competition Committee, assisted by Natalie Berry, British Junior Team Member.

It's well worth a look and contains news about the BMC teams, competition results, reports on the British Bouldering Championship and the British Lead Climbing Championships, accounts by top British competition climbers, advice on technique by Dave MacLeod, Lucy Creamer on climbing and the Olympics, all lavishly illustrated by Alex Messengers excellent photography.
