The current Russian winter attempt on K2 has been abandoned after the Russian climber Vitaliy Gorelik died at Base Camp earlier today.

The Russian team had made it to 7200m a few days ago but had been turned back by bad weather and a forecast for more bad weather to come. Gorelik had suffered frost bite to both hands and returned to Base camp, awaiting a helicopter rescue. The chopper was unable to reach the camp for several days due to bad weather and despite medical attention at the camp, Gorelik passed away.

K2 (8,611 m) is the second highest mountain on earth. It was first climbed in 1954 but has yet to see a successful winter ascent.

Our thoughts are with the expedition members, friends and families.
