The RSPB are advising climbers to wait another week before climbing on some sea cliffs.

Nesting restrictions on many cliffs are usually lifted on the first of August, however this year following the long and hard winter many birds are late to nest. Elfyn Jones of the BMC has published a short news item with more information, but the general cut and thrust is below.

The advice is:

Carefully check the cliffs that normally have restrictions on them before committing to climb there. If there are still sea-birds flying around (especially auks or kittewakes) then avoid for another week.

Some Welsh cliffs that this could apply to include:

• Red Walls, Gogarth
• Stackpole, Pembrokeshire
• Cilan Head, Lleyn Peninsula
• Fantan B cliff, Lleyn Peninsula
• The Diamond, Little Orme
• Mewsford and other cliffs in Range East Pembrokeshire.

This does not mean that all cliffs are still restricted and the advice on the BMC RAD has not changed, but if there are are nesting birds still on the cliffs then please avoid for another week.
