Ben Bransby has just made the 2nd ascent of Pete Whittaker's impressive route Baron Greenback, E9/10, at Wimberry. The news was broken on the DMM Twitter Feed on Monday 24th.
The route was first tried by Miles Gibson but due to injury, Miles never managed to climb the route. Due to rumours of a font 8B crux sequence and the difficulty of the routes Miles had successfully put up, nobody tried the line for a number of years.
In early 2013, Pete Whittaker began to take an interest in the line, finding an alternative start making the climbing closer to french 8b than font 8B. After a number of sessions working the route, Pete made a successful ascent, but not without testing the fall. You can find out more about Pete's ascent in this UKC News Report.
The route is protected by three tiny, old aid climbing bolts, one of which Pete had to use a bamboo 'clipstick' to be able to clip. Pete was at the crag to witness Ben's ascent and we will bring you more information as soon as possible.
